CAR-MOVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,410, dated January 3, 1893.

.To all whom it mag/,concerm B e it known that I, WILLIAM L. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blanchard, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Car-Mover, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in car-starters or movers, and has for its object to provide simple andeffective means ofthe character set forth, whereby the desired operation may be attained by the application of a small amount of power, and with this object in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a car, a wheel and axle, and track, showing the improved construction in connection with the relative parts. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a part of the improved device disconnected.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1, designates a car of any preferred form, having secured to the under side thereof, preferably to the sill of the same, a clamp 2, consisting of a bar 2 with upturned ends 3 and 4, the ends 3, having a spur 5 formed on the inner upper side, and the end 4 is provided with a screw threaded opening 6 therein to receive an adjustable clamping screw 7, having an operating crank 8, and a head 9 on opposite ends. The spur 5 engages one side of the sill to which the clamp is applied, and the head 9, the opposite side of said sill. The bar 2 connecting the upturned ends forms a yoke on which is loosely suspended a link 10 of considerable length, and in the lower portion of said link is adj ustably mounted a hand -lever 11, having a series of fulcrum notches 12, in the under edge thereof adapted to engage the lower bend of the link, when adjusted, and prevent slipping of the lever from a desired point of adjustment.v A link 13, is secured to an eye-bolt 14, mounted in the inner end of the hand lever 11, and also connected to an eyebolt 15 in the outer end of an arm 16, of a clevis 17, consisting of a iiatplate of substantial U -shaped form loosely embracing the car-wheel, and by means of this connection the said clevis 17, may be raised or lowered to engage with or be disengaged from the flange and tread of a car wheel 18. The clevis 17 is constructed of square iron or steel, and it will be observed that Ithe stress or power exerted thereon is confined to one side thereof and thereby clamps the same on the wheel and prevents slipping thereof. When the stress or power is removed by raising the lever 11, the said clevis slips down and becomes disengaged. The clevis is also formed with anV inner arm 19, to which is secured a rod 20, having its free end 21, curvedy and engaging the axle 22. rod 20, the clevis 17, is held in proper position relatively to the circle of the carwheel.
The device is simple vin its operation and can be effectually manipulated by the application of a small amount of power, and it will be observed that it may be applied to any car without changing the construction of ,the latter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isz- 1. In a car-starter or mover, the combina-4 tion of a clevis consisting of a at plate having its innermost arm suspended from the car-axle and located beyond the inner side of the car-wheel, a loosely-suspended adjustable operating lever above said clevis extending outwardly from the car and having its inner endloosely connected to one side of said clevis and a loosely-mounted freely-movable link by which said lever is suspended, substantially as described.

In a car starter or mover, the combination of a clamp depending from the lower side of a car and consisting of a horizontal bar with upturned ends, a link loosely suspended from said horizontal bar of the clamp, a lever having notches in the under edge thereof and adjustably and loosely mounted in said link, a clevis embracing the wheel By means of this and to which said link is also secured and consisting of n. main body, an outer arm pro- Jeoting from the main body at a right angle end an inner arm, and a rod attached to the inner arm of said olevis and having its free end loosely engaging the axle of the car-Wheel, substantially as described.
