DEVICE FOR TREATING SHEEP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,055, dated January 3, 1893. Application filed fieptember 26, 1892. Serial No. 446,875. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JACOB E. WENGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burton City, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sheep-Foot Cleaning and Medicine-Applying Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a side view showing the medicine-tank, Water-tank and the brush-mechanism in section. Fig. 2, is a top view of the brush showing the location of the foot-stops and the rollers. Fig. 3, is an end view showing the location of the door and illustrating certain parts in section. Fig. 4, is a detached view of one of the foot-stops, and its comb. Fig. 5, is a transverse section of one of the foot-stops. Fig. 6, is a detached view of one of the brush-blocks, showing the drive-chains properly attached to said block.

The present invention has relation to sheepfoot cleaning and medicine applying machines, and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings A, represents the water-tank, which may be of any desired size, reference being had to the size of the machine designed to be constructed, and is preferably formed of plank or like material, the joints of which tank are formed water tight. To the sides of the water-tank A, are properly journaled the brush-drums B, which drums are preferably formed with angles upon their peripheries, substantially as shown in the drawings, it being understood that any desired number of angles may be used without departing from the nature of my invention. To one of the brush drums B, is securely attached the crank a, which crank is for the purpose of communicating rotary motion to the brush-drum. Around the brushdrums B, is located the endless-brush O, which endless-brush consists of any desired number of brush-blocks such as c, which brush-blocks are securely attached to the drive-chains D,

which drive-chains extend around the brush tank A, and the medicine-tank E, is located the partition d, which partition is preferably inclined as shown in Fig. 1.

To the top of the water-tank A, and the medicine-tank E, is located the rack or cage F, which rack or cage may be of any desired height and may be constructed in any convenient manner, as its only object is to prevent the sheep from escaping during the time their feet are being cleaned, and the medicine applied.

For the purpose of preventing the sheep from standing still as they are passed over the endless-brush C, the stops H, are provided, which stops are located above the brush C, and are securely attached to the flaring portion of the cage F; or if desired, the watertank may be extended upward and said footstops attached to the sides of the water-tank.

For the purpose of removing the dirt from the brushes, the combs e, are provided, which combs lare fixed to the bottom or under side of the stops'H, and are located substantially as shown in the drawings.

The combs e, are for two purposes; one purpose being as above stated, to clean the endless-brush, and the other purpose is to provide stops for the feet of the sheep and prevent their feet from being drawn under the stops H.

For the purpose of preventing any injury to the feet of the sheep, the rubber-ribs f, are provided, which ribs are located upon the front side of each stop, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. These rubber stops are preferably formed of rubber-hose, thereby providing a cushion for the feet of the sheep to strike against.

For the purpose of supporting the top or upper section of the endless-brush O, the interposed plank or strip I, is provided, which interposed plank or strip is securely united or attached to the sides of the tank A. It will be understood that by providing the interposed plank or strip I, the endless-brush C, will be held firm and thereby prevent any sagging of said endless brush between the brush-drums 13.

Over the medicine-tank E, are located the rollers J, which rollers may be properly journaled to the sides of the medicine tank. The object and purpose of the rollers J, is to compel the sheep as they pass through the medicine-tank, to lift theirfeet over the rollers and thereby prevent the sheep from hobbling through the medicine tank on three feet. The object of providing rollers such as J, is to prevent the sheep from stepping from one roller to another; as it will be understood that the rollers will turn when the sheep place their feet upon the same, and thereby throw their feet from the rollers and compel them to place them in the medicine contained in the medicine-tank. It will be understood that the rollers should be located at such a height that the feet of the sheep can reach the bottom of the tank and thereby prevent the rollers from elevating or holding the sheep out of the medicine.

For the purpose of preventing the sheep from walking on the top of the stops H, the top or upper edges of said stops are formed beveled, as shown in the drawings.

The object and purpose of forming the medicine-tank shallow as indicated in Fig. 1, is to bring the bottom of said medicine-tank nearer to the plane of the top or upper section of the endless-brush O, and at the same time requiring a less quantity, as the only object is to provide a sufficient quantity of medicine to cover or immerse the feet of the sheep.

The material used in the construction of the endless-brush O, is preferably broom-corn of about one and one half (1%) to two inches in length above the faces of the brush-blocks c. It will be understood of course, that other material than that of broom-corn may be used Without departing from the nature of my invention; but in practice I find that broom-corn is better-adapted for the purpose designed.

Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of the water-tank A, having located therein the drums B, and the endless-brush O, the medicine-tank E, located at one end of the water-tank, the stops H, located above the endless-brushes c, and the rollers J, located in the top or upper side of the medicine-tank, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of the water-tank having located therein the brush-drums B, the endless-brush O, the drive-chains D having fixed thereto the brush-blocks c, the stops H, provided with the cushions f, and the combs e, the medicine-tank E, the rollers J, located at the top or upper side of said medicine-tank, and the partition d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of the water-tank, having located therein an endless-brush mounted upon revolving drums, an interposed strip located below the upper section of the endlessbrush, the foot-stops located above the upper section of the endless-brush, a medicine-tank located at one end of the Water-tank, and the cage F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. The combination of a Water-tank having located therein the endless-brush mounted upon revolving-drums by means of drivechains such as D, a medicine-tank located at one end of the water-tank, an inclined-partition, located between the watertank and medicine tank, the stops H, provided with beveled edges upon their top or upper sides, the cushions f, and combs e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
