T. DODDRELL. CLAMP 'FOR DRAWING TOGETHER WOO-DEN-JJIQINT$. v No. 488,546 Patented Dec. 27,1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS DODDRELL, OF SLOUGIL ENGLAND.
CLAMP FOR DRAWING TOGETHER WOODEN JOINTS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 488,546, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed November 12, 1891. Serial No. 11,682. (N0 model.) Patented in England November 27, 1889, No, 19,052; in France Decemberl,1889,N0.33.079; in Belgium December 31. 1889, No- 88,867, and in Germany June 18. 1890, No. 52.387-
T0 at whom itmcty concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS DODDRELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Slough P. 0., in the county of Buckingham, England, have invented a new and useful Improved (Jlarnp for Drawing Together \Vooden Joints, (for which I have obtained patents in the following countries: Great Britain, No. 19,052, bearing date November 27, 1889; Belgium December31, 1889, No. 88,867; Germany June 18, 1890, No. 52,387; France December 14, 1889, No. 33,079,) of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation with the pieces of timber to be joined together broken oif at the ends. The straps are broken 01$ for want of space; Fig. 2 isaside elevation.
My invention comprises a screw bolt 1) about four inches long with a winged nut 01 the point of the screw to be reduced so as to form a shoulder. A washer and a small iron plate 6 are fitted easy to the reduced point to withstand the pressure and so form a fiat bearing on the article to be joined. At the other end of the screw is a hole through which a steel pin a is passed for the purpose of screwing up.
0 c are two strips of iron with holes t'abont two inches apart upthe center, the top hole being oval shaped so as to hang easy on the wings d of the nut. A block of hard wood It with a steel pin j wedged through iteccentric from the top and bottom edges and the ends of the pin to project about an inch each side of the block it. The ends of the pin j are inserted in the corresponding holes i of the strips of iron 0, c, and the block turned either the thick or thin side up according to the breadth of the articles g, g, to be joined. The screw bolt 1) can now be screwed up and the articles g,g,which rest on the block it and between the iron strips 0, 0, will be drawn together equally on each side, and'even if. the joint or joints have not been properly prepared it will nevertheless draw up true, the prepared surfaces adapting themselves to each other. It is not necessary that the iron strips 0, c, orside pulls should be over three feet long as several can be joined together with a small nut and bolt. The clamp can be made toanysize or strength.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the screw bolt with the washer and iron plate fitted to the reduced point, and the steel pin passed through the hole in the other end, the winged nut with the perforated iron strips hung thereon, and the stationary block against which the work is forced with the steel pin wedged through it for drawing together wooden joints, substantially as herein described and according to the accompanying drawings.
THOMAS DODDRELL.
