UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. JOHNSON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
LAMP FOR BURNING HYDROCARBON OR OTHER OILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patnet N 0. 487,147, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed February 25,1892. Serial No. 422,792. [No model.) Patented in England January 6 1891, No. 256; in Germany March 1,1891. No. 59,050; in France March 2, 1891,1T0-21L810, and in Belgium March 3,1891, No. 94,006-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ALBERT J OHN- SON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Poplar, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps for Burning Hydrocarbon or other Oils, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 256, bearing date January 6, 1891; in Germany, No. 59,050, hearing date March 1, 1891; in France, No. 211,810, hearing date March 2, 1891, and in Belgium, No. 94,006, hearing date March 3, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the features of novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be properly understood and readily carried into practice, I will proceed, aided by the accompanying drawing, more fully to describe the same.
The drawing is an elevation, partly in section, representing my invention applied to a table oil-lamp provided With two burners, one burner being omitted.
(t represents the fixed oil-tank; b, the removable oil-reservoir; c c, oil-supply tubes; d, the burner, and d the burner oil-well.
The removable oil-reservoir b has an oil supply aperture 11* and a valve 19 at its lower end, which latter is connected to a cross-piece b which by rods or wires b passing through vertical tubes b fixed in the reservoir 1), is connected to a hand-piece b at the top of such reservoir. The fixed tank a has one or more openings 0. in the bottom thereof, according to the number of burners supplied, to allow the oil therein to flow into the oil-tubes c c.
A cup 6* is fixed in the bottom of the oiltank a to receive the oil as it flows frornthe bottom of the reservoir b and to seal the outlet from such reservoir when the oil therein rises level with the mouth of the outlet 19*. Capillary siphon-wicks f are placed over the edge of the cup 6* with their inner ends extending to the bottom of said cup and their outer ends extending to the bottom of the tank a, which by small holes a communicate with the oil-supply tubes 0 c. The cup eforms, with the fixed oil-tank a, an intermediate chamber e 7 It will be evident that my improvements are applicable to removable-reservoir oil-lamps of various designs and provided with any required number of burners.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the fixed oil-tank 0t and the removable reservoir b, having an outlet b*, of the cup 9*, fixed in the bottom of the fixed oil-tank and adapted to receive the oil as it flows from the bottom of the removable reservoir and to seal the outlet therefrom when the oil therein rises level with the outlet, and the capillary siphon-wicks f, placed over the edge of the cup, having their inner ends extending to the bottom of the cup and their outer ends extending to the bottom of the fixed oil-tank, substantially as described.
S. A. JOHNSON.
