UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. WRIGHT, OF DUBLIN, IRELAND.
CLIP FOR HOLDING PAPERS OR FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,316, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed June 1. 1892. Serial No. 4155;135. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HUDSON WRIGHT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Dublin, Ireland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clips for Holding Papers or for other Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention has forits object to provide a novel, simple, and economical clip for holding newspapers, periodicals, and labels or for other purposes; and it consists in a clip composed of a longitudinally-slotted tube having an orificein juxtaposition to one end and a core-pin having an angularly-bent end passing through the orifice and provided with a head.
The invention. is illustrated by the accom-' panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a clip constructed inaccordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. I
In order to enable my invention to be clearly understood, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein The numeral 1 indicates a tube having a longitudinal slot 3 and provided in juxtaposition to one end with an orifice 4:. The tube is preferably composed of sheet metal which is slightly elastic; but any material suitable for the conditions required maybe employed. The orifice 4 is formed in the back portion of the tube or that portion which is directly opposite the longitudinal slot. A core-pin 5, preferably cylindrical,-is arranged longitudinally inside the tube and one end is angularly bent to form a shank 6, extending substantially at right angles to the body of the pin. This shank passes loosely through the orifice 4 and is upset or otherwise provided with a head 7 for the purpose of retaining the pin in operative connection with the tube. The diameter or thickness of the core-pin is somewhat greater than the width of the longitudinal slot 3.
In practical operation the article to be hold is folded and then slipped upon the core-pin, so that the article, with a part of its folded portion, extends through the longitudinal slot, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 2. By this means the article is securely held and the tube constitutes an edging or backing for the same.
The improved clip is Well adapted for temporarily binding newspapers and periodicals,
but is adapted for general use where an edging or backing for papers, labels, and the like is desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A clip for holding papers or for other purposes, consisting of a longitudinally-slotted tubehaving an orifice in juxtaposition to one end and a core-pin haying an angularly-bent end passing through the orifice and provided with a head, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set in hand this 12th day of May, 1892.
SAML. H. WRIGHT.
Witnesses:
