Description
(No Model.)
G.,O. WESTERVELT. PLOW OOLTER.
No. 484,127. Patented Oct. 11, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE G. VVESTERVELT, OF SOUTHBEND, INDIANA.
PLOW-COLTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,127, dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed March 5, 1892. Serial No. 423,833- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. WESTERVELT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. J oseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow- Oolters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference thereon, forming a partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a side-hill plow, showing the colter applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a side-hill plow, showing the mold-board and the locking devices. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the pl ow-standard, showinga box for receiving the j ointer-shaft. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the colter, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the shaft for operating the colter.
This invention relates to certain improvementsin colters for side-hill or reversible mold -board plows, and relates particularly to the device for oscillating the colter from side to side to turn it simultaneously with the mold-board, which improvements are fully described in the following specification and claim.
Referring to the drawings, A is the plowbeam.
G is the standard to which the mold-board attaches.
H is the mold-board, pivoted at its point to the toe of the standard and connected at its rear edge to a bracket V, which is pivoted to theheel of the standard, so that the mold-board can be adjusted from right to left of the beam. The mold board may be connected to the standard in any suitable manner, so that it can be set to right or left.
B is a shank, having its lower end provided standard, and has secured on its square rear end the oscillating latch J. This latch J is intended to be operated by the foot of the plowman to unlatch it from the mold-board whenever it is desired to reverse the moldboard, and in so doing said latch will be oscillated and will, through the medium of shaft F, to which it attaches, reverse the colter 0 simultaneously with the mold-board, so that the latch J will perform the two operations and save having to turn the'colter by hand or by some other separate means, and materially lessens the number of parts and cost of the plow.
The invention consists, therefore, in connecting the colter directly with the moldboard latch, so that the colter will be turned simultaneously with the mold-board.
The latch mechanism of the mold-board in itself forms no part in this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tov secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
In a reversible mold-board plow, the combination of the standard G, oscillating latch J, shaft F, shaft D, coupled to shaft F, jointer c, and shank B, and sleeve E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE G. WVESTERVELT.
