P. GANZLIN. COMBINED BOOKOASE AND DESK. No. 483,669. Patented Oct: 4, 1892.
WITNESSES: INVENTOH By a (9. Z/Q/WT Q ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL GANZLIN, OF SOIIWERIN, MEOKLENBURG, GERMANY.
COMBINED BOOK-CASE AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,669, dated October 4, 1892.
Application filed March 28, 1892. Serial No. 426,777- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL GANZLIN, turner, of Schwerin, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg, in the German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Combined Book-Case and Desk, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This present invention relates to an improved combined book-case and desk, whereby the latter can be used in sitting or stand ing posture, the front plate lid or closure to the book-case or other similar article of furniture being capable of such adjustment that the said plate can be used in its highest position as a desk for persons who write in standing and in its lowest position for those who write in sitting posture.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view of the book-case in closed condition. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view with the plate or lid raised to the position for use when writing in standing, and Fig. 3 a like view with the plate or lid lowered for use when writing in sitting posture. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a part of one of the side walls of the case; and Fig. 5, a detail of the guide for the plate or lid, partly in elevation and partly in section.
The book-case or other receptacle a is closed by means of a plate or lid 6, instead of one or more doors, as heretofore. Said front plate or lid Z) is held in closed position by the noses or pegs b b, Fig. 5, which run in grooves.
formed in or between the guide-rails c, and in this position lie in the curved upper part c of the said groove. The rails c are let into or countersunk into the inner surface of the side walls a a of the book-case.
The lower free end of the plate I), which can be provided with a suitable lock, is pivotally connected by means of the pivots b b to two lever-arms cl d, the opposite ends of which are provided with two pivots e e, which gear into inclined slots ff and are retained in the same by means of suitable knobs or heads 6 on the aforenamed pivots. The slots ff are at their lower ends 1' directed downward in an almost vertical direction. When the plate or lid 19 is closed, the pivots e e of the If it is desired to place the plate or lid 0 into a position for writing in standing, as shown in Fig. 2, it is only necessary to raise the lower end of the same until the pivots e e of the levers d cl, which must follow the move ment of the plate or lid until the same reach the downward inclined part 2' of the grooves f f The plate or lid 12 is prevented from falling down by the pivots b b, gearing into the curved parts 0' of the rails c on the one part, while the levers d d, connected to the other end of the plate or lid, rest, by means of their pivots e e, in the vertical part i of the slots ff.
In order to bring the plate or lid 1) into the position for writing in sitting, as represented by Fig. 3, the same is raised a trifle and then drawn forward, so that the pivots b b are freed from the curved parts 0 and brought into the main grooves c. If the lower edge of the plate is raised a trifle to free the pivots h b from the upper edge, they can be moved down the grooves 0 until they reach the lower end of the same and the plate given the position represented i n Fig. 3. The levers d d or their pivots e 6' follow the above-described movement until they reach the part 1; of the slots f f In this manner the plate I) will by means of its pivots b I) and e e and the levers dd be securely held in position.
In order to return the plate or lid 1) to the position shown in Fig. 1 it is only necessary to raise the upper end of the plate 17 until the pivots b b enter the parts a of the grooves c.
Having fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, in a combined book-case and desk, the body portion having the inclined slots, the adjustable plate, and the arms (1 01, extending from the body portion to the said plate, the outer ends of said arms being pivoted to the plate and the opposite ends working in the slots, substantially as described.
2. In a combined book-case and desk, the combination, with the body portion having inclined slots, of an adjustable plate, arms pivoted at one end thereto and at their other ends provided with headed pivots working in said slots, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined book-case and desk, the combination, with the body portion, the adjustable plate having movable arms 01 d, pivotally connected thereto at one end, the other end having headed pivots Working in the inclined slots having a downward dip, and the adjustable plate working in vertical grooves formed in or between guide-rails c, the curved part c of the rails for the engagement of pivots 6 thus preventing the plate from falling, 10 substantially as set forth.
7 In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscriblng witnesses.
PAUL GANZLIN. Witnesses:
