Description
G. ASMUS.
Device for Removing Lamp Chimneys. No. 48,354. V Patented Jung27, 1865.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
eEo eE hence, on HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR REMOVING LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,354, dated June 27, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, GEoRcrE AsMUs, of Houghton, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a newand Improved Holder for Chimneys of Lamps, &c. and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification.
In the use of the many lamps, &c., designed for the burning of illuminating oils and gases it often becomes necessary to remove the chimney or other shade used when in a heated state, by doing which the fingers were extremely lia-. ble to be burned or blistered.
To provide some implement or holder for this purpose whichwould be simple and portable and easily adjustable to the many sizes and shapes of chimneys, shades, &c., is the object of the present invention, and is accomplished thereby.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved holder is represented, Figure 1 being a view of a kerosene-oil lamp with my holder applied to the chimney thereof, and Fig. 2 a plan or top View of the holder.
to 1 represent an elastic and flexible metallic band, bent in the form of a semicircle, or nearly so, or in any other suitable shape. At each end of the band a a, and upon the inner side of the same,-are securely fastened cushions or pads b b,-made of cork or any other desired material, said cushions being slightly hollowed out, as represented at 0 c in Fig. 2, in order to causethem to more fully conform to the periphery of the chimney or shade, and thus give a greater bearing-surface upon the same when applied thereto.
f f are rings or handles attached to the band a, and on the opposite side to the cushions b I), through which rings the fingers arepassed, as represented in Fig. 1, when the holder is used.
Taking the holder by the fingers, as described and represented in the drawings, (see Fig. 1,) and passingitover and partially around the chimney, the ends of the band a are caused to firmly grasp the glass by simply moving the fingers toward each other, which can then be readily removed from or placed upon the lamp at pleasure.
By forming cushions at the points of contact of the holder with the chimney I more fully preventthe transmission of heat from the heated glass to the fingers in contact withthe band at those points. The ends of the band a are slightly curved outward, giving a better shape to the holder, also facilitating theproper grasping of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a lamp-chimney holder made substantially as herein described.
