UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS SMITH, OF TOMS RIVER, NEW' JERSEY.
RING-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,399, dated September 27, 1892.
Application filed May 11, 1892.
Serial No, 432,659- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS SMITH, of Toms River, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Ring-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in ring-holders; and the object of my invention is to produce a simple and adjustable holder which may be arranged in a tray, case, or in any other convenient way and which will hold any kind of a ring, as well as a ring of any ordinary size, and which also is adapted to hold any kind of jewelry having a ring or loop attached thereto.
A further object of the invention is to construct the holder so that it will hold the ring or other article in a way to exhibit it to advantage.
To this end myinvention consists in a ringholder the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder as applied to an individual case. Fig. 2 is a detail central vertical section of the holder proper, and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same.
The holder is provided with a suitable base 10,which is preferably hollow and has an oval top, and in the top of the base is a recess 11, having a bottom 12 and back wall 13, which are preferably placed at right angles to each other, and the wall 13 of the recess is slotted, as shown at 14:, so as to receive the free end of a spring 15,which is preferablya fiat spring and projects through the slot 14, the front end of the spring lying flatwise upon the bottom 12 of the recess. The spring 15 extends backward into the hollow base 10 and is doubled upon itself, as shown at 16, at the back side of the base and has an upwardly-extending member 17, which abuts against and is secured to the top wall of the base 10. The spring 15 presses downward upon the bottom 12, and when a ring is to be placed in position one side of it is simply slipped beneath the free end of the spring 15,the back edge of the ring lying against the wall 13 of the recess 11. The tension of the spring will hold the ring tightly in place, and the spring has sufficient vertical movement to permit any ordinary ring or other article having a loop to be secured beneath the spring.
For exhibiting rings and other articles a number of holders maybe arranged in a tray, or each holder may be arranged in an individual case, as shown in Fig. 1, in which case the holder is secured tothe base portion 18 of the case l9,which case may be of any approved construction, and the top surface of the holder and spring may be covered with plush or other material to make it as attractive as possible. It will be noticed that the bottom 12 of the recess 11 forms a shelf upon which the flat spring 15 presses, and it will be understood that the form of the base may be changed to suit the taste. It will be further observed that in the holder, as shown, the free end of the spring 15 is the only exposed part of it, and this may be covered or ornamented, so that the holder will be fully as handsome as the ordinary holder having a fixed top.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a ring-holder consisting in the raised or hollow base 10, having a recess 11 in the upper side at one end, the recess having a bottom wall 12 and a back wall 13, provided with a slot 14:, and the spring 15 within the base and projecting at one end through the slot 14 and across the bottom wall 12 of the recess 11, substantially as set forth.
JULIUS SMITH.
