1 s. MORGAN. ROLLER KNIFE FOR TRIMMING WALL PAPER. No. 482,830. Patented Sept. 20, 1892.
C I d \llllll\;llllllihiiw cf 92: M/%
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID S. MORGAN, OF ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
ROLLER-KNIFE FOR TRIMMING WALL-PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,830, dated September 20, 1892.
Application filed June 1'7, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. MORGAN, a citizen of theUnitcdStates, and a resident of Asheville,in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper Outters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wallpaper cutters, and more particularly to cutters having rotating blades.
The following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is an edge View, and Fig. 3 is a central sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, Adesignates the handle which is preferably made with an opening a, in order to give it strength coupled with lightness, and also to enlarge it in order to better fit the hand of the user.
B is a head having a boss b, which is bored out to receive a journal-pin G. The pin 0 is provided with a head 0 and is retained in any desired position in the head by means of a set-screw 0.
Upon the journal-pin G and between its head 0 and the head 3 of the instrument is mounted the cutting-wheel D. The wheel D has a thick hub 01. On one side it is fiat and on the other side it is concaved from the hub to the periphery, as shown at d, in such a manner that the metal is quite thin foraconsiderable distance from the periphery back toward the hub. By thus shaping the wheel I am enabled to sharpen it with greater facility, and l find that it will cut longer without becoming dull than wheels having thicker blades and more obtuse edges. Partially surrounding the wheel is a guard E in the form of a thin curved plate, which is attached to the handle. This plate is concentric with the knife and is broad enough to form a thumbserial No. 396,652- (No model.)
rest when it is desired to press strongly upon the cutter. It extends about equally to both sides of the handle and effectually protects the thumb and fingers from the blade. The
- guard and handle are made symmetrical, so
that the cutter may be used with equal facility by either right or left handed persons.
In using my improved trimming-knife the blade may be drawn along any desired line and guided by the eye, or the fiat side of the blade may be placed against a straight edge when it is desired to out upon a straight line.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The improved wall-paper cutter comprising the handle, the head B, perforated to receive the journal-pin, the journal-pin adjustably inserted in the perforation and provided with ahead 0, the circular cutting-blade mounted on said journal-pin between the heads B and c, and means for holding the journal-pin in different positions, said blade having a thickened hub and being plane upon one side and concaved from the hub to the periphery upon the opposite side, substantially as described.
2..lhe improved wall-paper cutter com prising the handle, the head B, having aboss b, the journal-pin G, inserted in the head and having a head 0, and the revolving circular cutting-blade mounted upon the journal-pin, the said handle having a guard integral therewith and extending equally to either side thereof concentric with the blade, whereby the cutter may be used with either hand, substantially as described.
DAVID S. MORGAN.
