GEORGE HENRY CURREY, OF EVANT, TEXAS.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,725, dated September 20, 1892.
Application led December 12 1891. Serial No. 414,862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE HENRY CURREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evant, in the county of Ooryell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in bedsteads; and it consists in the provision of adjustable hangers for mattress-supports, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a bedstead embodying my invention, the cap-plate h of one of the hangers being removed to show the form in crosssection of the mortises in which the hangers are seated; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line :c a: on Fig. l.
Referring by numeral of designation tothe said drawings, l indicates the end rails of the bed-frame, which are provided at suitable points with slots or mortises to receive the tenon ends of the side rails 2. Formed at suitable intervals in the inside of the side and end rails are vertical mortises or grooves 4, which are preferably of a dovetail form in cross-section, so as to prevent lateral inward displacement of the hangers while in operation.
5 indicates my improved hangers, of which any suitable number may be employed. These hangers 5, which may be formed from any suitable material, respectively comprise the vertical shank or body O, of dovetail form in cross-section, which is adj ustably seated in one of the mortises or grooves 4 of the frame, and the horizontal branch 7, extending inwardly at right angles from the lower end of the shank or body 6.
Suitably secured to the side and end rails of the bed-frame and covering the upper ends of the inortises or grooves 4 are plates 10, which are provided with screw-threaded apertures for the passage of the adjustingscrews 9, which screws are 'connected in a swiveled manner to the body of the hangers and are provided at their upper ends with heads or wings 11, whereby theyl may be readily turned to raise or lower the hangers, as desirable.
Formed at intervals in the upper side of the branches? of the hangers 5, and eXtends ing transversely thereof, is a series of slots 8, which are designed to seat the side and end bars 13 of a mattress-support 12, which may be of any construction suitable for use in conjunction with my improved hangers.
By reason of the provision of a series of slots in each hanger branch '7 it will be read` ily perceived that mattress-supports of various sizes may be employed in conjunction with a bed-frame provided with my improved hangers, and by reason of the slots 8 of the hanger branches 7 being pitched or inclined toward the body or shank 6 it will be further perceived that the liability of a casual disconnection of the mattresssupport from the hangers is reduced to a minimum. By the provision of hangers such as described it will be readily perceived that a mattress-support may be readily connected to a bed-frame and when so connected may be readily adjusted to and adj ustably fixed in different horizontal planes, which is an important desideratum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a bedstead, the combination, with the side and end rails having vertical mortises or grooves, the cap-plates covering the upper ends of the grooves or mortises and having threaded apertures, and a mattress-support, of the hangers respectively comprising the vertical shank or body seated Vin the grooves or mortises of the rails, and the horizontal branch extending inwardly from said shank or body and having a slot to seat the side and end bars of the mattress-support, and the adjustingscrews taking through the threaded apertures of the cap-plates and having their lower ends connected to the hangers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE HENRY CURREY.
