Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER SHRIVER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. l
IMPROVEMENT IN COPYING-PRESSES, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,217, dated June 13, 1865.`
To all lwhom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WALTER SHRIVER, of New York, in the county of New"Yo1k,in the Stateof New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Gopying-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the 4followingisan exact and full description thereof,
l is to cast the socket in apiece with the platen and provide it with a cavity to receive the screw-step, in which is turned an annular recess, and to attach the platen to the screw by running in melted soft metal.
My improvement consists in forming the lower end of the screw with an annular groove, b, and after covering that portion of the screw with a composition of plumbago, O, or other suitable material, mixed to a proper consistency and dried, inserting the screw so prepared into thel mold and casting the socket and the platen attached around it, the plumbago com position preven tingadhesion between the scpew and platen and allowing more or less play, according to the thickness of composition, as may be desired. Thus I greatly reduce the expense of manufacturing and add to the neatness, durability, and simplicity ofthese presses by a means never heretofore employed in their production.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure Letters The method above described for forming the connection between the screw and the platen by casting the two together, as described, for the purpose set forth.
' WALTER SHRIVER.
