,` ,UNITED STATES PATENT .Ott-ICE.
l'lVl'PROl/ED EXTENS l ON- LAD DER..
Specification forming parla-of 'Letters Patent No. 1B-,210,` dated June 13, 1865.
Be it known that I. JOHN.-
jof Ohio, have :inventeda new and Improved l Extension-Ladder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description s thereof', which will enable-'others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of `this. specification, in which- Figure/1 is a`view of my invention adj usted' as along ladder andpartially extended; 2, a side sectional view ot' Fig. 1, taken inthe linea; Fig. 3, a sidesectional view of the saineadjnsted as a step-ladder.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in a combination ot' a series ot' ladders arranged in such a manner that theymay be adjusted togetherand extendedwith the greatest facility, so as to 4form a long ladder to be used against buildings, dto.,
and be also capable of being adjusted together so as to form an vextension step-ladder, when the latter is required..
- i In the following. description the invention is shown composed of three sections or ladders,
'A A BG. The former one, A,is rather wider than B', aiid is also made heavier, whileB is wider v and heavier than C.
(SeeFig. l.) Iheyare all constructed i'n thei'isual 4manner with side pieces, ,it a, having rounds b fitted in them.
To the upper ends of the side pieces, a a.,
` of the ladder A there are secured at right angles metal plates or arms c c, at the ends of which, at `their in'nersides, rollers d d 'are fit1 4 t/ed," behind rwhich the side pieces, a a, ofthe p ladder- B are placed. These rollers d d serve as guides for the ladder B, and admit of it 'being raised` and lowered, drawn inward or shoved-out from Anviththe greatest facility. j The upper ends of the-side pieces, a a,- ot' the ladderB have metal platese @secured to them at right angles, andthe outer ends ofV these plates are. bent overinward or towardeach l other toformguides for the ladder C, the side L. RIPLEgof Fremont-,in the'icounty of' Sandusky and State" piecesof whieh'it and work within'on at the I inner' side piecesv of B, the latter ,being `fitted within the side pieces of A, as shownin Fig. 1. By this arrangement it will be seen that the .ladder C may be readily extended or drawn out from B, and B readily extended or drawn.
out from 'A and the laddersB C niay be retained at all f pointwithin the scope of their movementby-meansof hooks ff, attached to their lowest rounds, and these rounds may be allowed to turn in their side pieces to facilitate the adjustment ofthe hooks over the rounds ot' the ladder over which they slide or on thel ground and the operator having hold ,of the lower ends ot' A andB.
In order to convert the device into an extension step-ladder, the ladders A B are placed .back to back, and a rod, h, passed through' eyes t' in the plates e e, (see Fig. 3,) the ladder G being adjustedfto B, as before.
The'. side pieces, a, ot' the ladders B C have i pins j driven' in them for the hooksfto rest against when turned back or free from 'therounds ot' the 4ladders over which they catch when the ladders are extended.
Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent- The combination ot' the rollers'cl and g,plates @and c, hooks j', eyesi, pin 7i, with the ladders A, B,a,ndy C, when constructed and arranged as and l'or the purposes specified, constituting a combined step and extension ladder.
