Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL E. CHEESEMAN, OF MILLDALE, KENTUCKY.
SEAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,472, dated August 23, 1892.
Application filed November 17, 1891. Serial No. 412,246. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it'known that I, SAMUEL E. GHEEsEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milldale, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals for Railroad Freight-Cars, Mail-Bags, &c.; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in seals to indicate upon mere inspection whether or not a freight railroad-car or whatever the seal may be used for has been tampered with.
The object is to produce a more eifective and more easily adjustable and cheaper device for the purpose than heretofore used.
The invention consists in forming from a sheet-metal blank a seal havinga shackle integral therewith, a portion of said blank on one side of said shackle being formed into a hollow cylinder or socket in which the free end or tongue of said shackle is adapted to be secured by corrugating. The other side of the blank will forma tag on which to stamp the name of the railroad and number of the station. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the blank as it will be when stamped. Fig. 2 represents the blank with the hollow cylinder. Fig. 3 represents the seal complete. Fig. 4 represents the seal corrugated to fasten it, or a side view.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the shackle, A the bent shackle, and A the clinched shackle.
B is the tin-tag part of the blank on which the name of the railroad and number of the station may be stamped when sealed.
0 is that part of the blank from which the hollow cylinder or socket is made. 0' is the blank with the hollow cylinder made on it. C is the hollow cylinder or socket corrugated to secure the seal. Slight changes which might suggest themselves to skilled mechanics could be made in the form of the sheet-metal blank without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown.
What I claim is A seal consisting of a sheet-metal blank, having a shackle integral therewith, a portion of said blank on one side of said shackle being formed into a hollow cylinder in which the free end of said shackle is adapted to be secured, the other side of said blank forming a tag, substantially as described and shown.
SAML. E. OHEESEMAN.
