No. 480,364. Patented Aug. 9, 1892.

CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,364, dated August 9, 1892.
Application tiled August 25, 1891. Serial No. 403.731- (ND model- I To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE CANUTEsoN, of Leland, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to clevises such as are used on plows and similar implements; and itconsists in improvements by means of which I secure extreme simplicity in construction and operation and at the same time attain maximum strength and without having any loose parts to become mislaid or lost.
In the drawings which illustrate my invention, and in which like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures, Figure l represents a side View of the clevis complete. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the side pieces, and Fig. 3 s a top View of the stud or bolt.
My improved clevis consists of the two sections A and B, the former being provided at one end with a stud or bolt a and the latter with a socket Z2 to receive the bolt. Both sections are provided at their draft ends with elongated slots c, which at the point of draft are beveled to conform to the inner line of the draft-ring C, which passes through the slots and prevents the two sections from becoming entirely separated, yet at the same time permits the free movement of those sections for the purpose of adjusting the clevis to aplowbeam. Vhen, as in use, draft is exerted on the ring C, the lateral pressure which it brings on the beveled portions of the slots c holds the two sections tightly together. The stud ct is cut away on each side of its head a', forming a neck, which permits its entrance into the narrow portion of the socket b, which is of less diameter than the main body of the stud. The construction of my clevis is so simple that its operation will be apparent at a glance. It will be observed that there are but three separate parts to my clevis, no one of which can be entirely separated from the others.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the stud formed as a part of one of the u side pieces; but it will be apparent that it maybe formed separate, threaded, and screwed into a corresponding female thread in the side piece, thus providing for studs of various lengths to suit plow-beams of different thicknesses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clevis consisting of two side pieces having at their draft ends elongated beveled slots and a ring passing through the slots and at the opposite end of one of the side pieces a stud or bolt d, having the head ct', and in the corresponding end of the other side piece the elongated socket h, in the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLE CANUTESON. IVtnesses:
K. K. MOLAN, MARTIN O. OSTELI).
