R. HWORTH. H BRCLAMP.
Patented Aug. 2, 1892.
UNITED STATES ROBERT ASI-IWORTH, OF
HAWSER ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA.
-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 479,777, dated August 2, 1892.
Application filed April 30, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT AsHwoETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hawser-Olamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Ivly invention relates to devices for uniting one end of a hawser or guy-rope to a portion of the same; and the objects of my improvement are to construct a simple and inexpensive clamp or clip, easily applied and adj usted in position and adapted to grip a guy-rope with increasing force, corresponding with any increasing strain thereon. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.-
Figure l is a perspective view of a guyclamp constructed in accordance with myinvention and represented as grasping two portions of a rope. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line x of Fig. 2.
In said drawings, A represents a cap-plate or metal block of substantially rectangular form, through which there is a vertical central perforation a and two perforations a2, parallel with the central one and at a short distance therefrom. Said block A has in the bottom thereof two grooves h, made across it, between the perforations a and a2 and of a width substantially equal tothe diameter of the guy-rope C it is intended to clasp. Said block forms one of the members of the clamp. The second member consists of a bolt D, having a T-shaped head, the arms D2 of which are bent parallel with the body of the bolt D and are of suitable size to enter and be received in the side perforations A2 of the block A. The body of the bolt is screw-threaded and made to pass through the central perforation o; of the block. Upon said screwthreaded body a nut e is placed, the bottom Serial No. 431,237. (No model.)
of which rests upon the top of the block A and is adapted to draw the bolt D through the central perforation a, and at the same time the arms D2 through the perforation a2 and clamptwo portions of the guy-rope between the bottom of the grooves b and the U- shaped loops cl2, formed in the head of the bolt between its body D and its arms D2. To insure the retention of the guy-rope by the two members of the clamp, the grooves b of the block A are concaved at h2 in the middle of their length, into which cavity a portion of the guy-rope is bent and forced under the pressure of the nut e upon the memberD and cannot slip from engagement with the clamp.
To prevent any accidental displacement of the nut e, a jam-nut c2 is generally placed upon the screw-threaded portion of the bolt D and made to impinge upon the nut e.
Having now fully described my invention, I claiml. A guy-clamp consisting of two members and a screw-nut, one member having three parallel perforations and the other member being in the form of a T-headed bolt having its body passing through the central perforation and through the nut and its arms through the other perforations, substantially as described.
2. In a guy-clamp, the combination of a metal block having three perfor-ations parallel with each other and grooves in the bottom thereof between said perforations, a T-headed bolt having its screw-threaded body passing ythrough the central perforation and its arms through the perforations on the sides of the central one, with a nut on said body, substan tially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT ASHWORTH. I/Vitnesses:
JOHN VANDERSLUIS, ANDREW C. ROBERTSON.
