UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM BITTNER, OF CUSTER, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,623, dated J'uly 26, 1892.
Application led February 20, 1892- Serial No. 422,236. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ADAM BITTNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Custer, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinCar-Couplin gs and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplings by which the cars may be coupled together without the necessity of a brakeman or other person going between the same, which is always a source of great danger.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction whereby superior advantages are attained with respect to economy, simplicity, and efficiency.
'lhe invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of two cars with my improved coupling applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, one of the carbodies being removed. Fig. 3 is a central sectional View.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the draw-bar, having an enlarged head 2. This draw-bar is supported near its front end by a bracket 3, secured to the under side of the car-body and at its rear end is formed with a piny 4, which passes through an aperture in the front wall of a stop 5, also secured to the car-body. Encircling this pin and located intermediate of said front wall of the stop and the rear end of the draw-bar is a coiled spring 6, which acts as a buffer when the cars come together and takes up the slack of the same. Passing through an aperture in the front end of the draw-bar is a transverse rod or bar 7, which projects laterally from each side thereof and has its ends'connected with curved bars 8, secured to the rear end of the drawbar. Pivoted on the bar 7 at one side of the drawbar is a beveled hook 9, connected at its outer 5o or free end with a rod l0, which extendsupwardly to the top of the car and is secured to a lever 12, pivoted to an upright 13. It will y be noted that the draw-bars are exact duplicates of each other, with the exception that 5 5 thehooks are on opposite sides thereof.
The operation is as follows: When the cars approach each other, the hooks are lowered, so that their beveled ends will strike and ride over the bars '7, when they will fall and en- 6o gage with said bars, thus securely coupling the cars. To uncouple the cars, the hooks are disengaged from the bars by manipulating the lever on top of the car.
The advantages of my invention will be obvious and need not therefore be definitely set forth. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a car-coupling, the combination, with 7o the draw-bar, of the transverse rod projecting laterally from each side thereof, the curved bars connecting the ends of said bar with the draw-bar, the beveled hook pivoted to said rod, and the connecting-rod and lever, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADAM BITTNER.
