O. E. THOMAS.
CLAMP FOR FRUIT JAR GAPS, &c.
No. 478,771. Patented. July 12, 1892.
UNITE ST TES ATENT} OFFICE.
CHARLES E. THOMAS, OF WVILLIAMSTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
CLAMP FOR FRUIT-JAR CAPS, 86C- SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,771, dated July 12, 1892. Application fil d February 23, 1892. Serial No. 422,521- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamstown, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Fruit-Jar Caps, 850.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for fastening the covers of fruit-jars and other vessels; and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of the character mentioned which may be readily applied to any of the fruit-jars of ordinary construction and which will serve to securely bind and hold the cover in place against the possibility of accidental displacement.
The device is equally well adapted for use in securing caps of covers which fit over the upper end or entrance of the jar and also for securing corks and that class of jar-covers which are designed to fit within the entrance of the jar and rest upon an inwardly-projecting flange or shoulder.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts,
all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating the same parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied to an ordinary fruit-jar. Fig. 2 is a like View of the device as applied to a cork or cover which is fitted within the entrance 'mouth of the jar shown in Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a fruitjar of ordinary construction, which is provided with the usual annular projection or collar B, which extends around the mouth of the jar, upon the upper face of which collar is placed the rubber packing-ring 0, upon which is seated the downward-extending edge of the cap or cover D.
The clamping device E is made, preferably, of sheet metal, and consists of the body portion F, made in a single piece and provided with arms F F, which diverge from the point at which their inner ends are united at an angle of substantially fifty degrees. These arms extend to the outer edge of the cap or cover of the jar, and thence down over the collar B, and the extreme ends of the arms are turned inwardly, as shown at f, said inwardly-extended portions being adapted to hook under or engage the lower edge of the collar B, as shown.
The body portion F of the clamp is provided between the arms F at their point of juncture with an extension F and to this extension is pivoted the inner end of the arm G, which arm is similar in form to the arms F just described, and its outer end is adapted, also, when in position to engage the collar B of the jar.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown the clamp as applied to that form of jar which is provided with a cap or cover which fits within the mouth of the jar and has its outer edges seated upon an inwardly-projecting shoulder or flange H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A cover-fastener for fruit and other jars, consisting of the body portion F, having radial hooked arms F and extension F and the hooked arm G, pivoted at its inner end to the extension F and its outer hooked end adapted to engage the lower edge of the collar upon the ends of the arms to engage the lower edge the jar, substantially as described, and for the of the collar upon the jar, substantially as depurpose specified. scribed, and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a fruit or other jar In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in 5 having an annular collar at its mouth, the cap presence of two witnesses.
or cover and the clamping device consisting of a body portion having two hooked arms CHARLES E. THOMAS. and a third hooked arm pivotally connected 'Witnesses: with the body portion, said clamp being adapt- CHARLES S. LAKE,
10 ed to fit over the top of the cap or cover and J ACOB J. STINEMAN.
