lie it known that, \Ve,OMAR ll. JEWELL, \VILLIAM M. JEWELL, and Inn. ll. JEwEmL. citizens of the United States, residing at (hi- 3 cage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filtemof which thefollowlug is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical cross-section of the filtering-tank on llll a: w of Fig-2'. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pipes for taking up and conveying away the filtered water and for admitting water to the filter while it is'being x 5 washed. ,Our object is to provide improved'mechanism for agitating the sand while the filter is being washed out, so that the wash-waters may thoroughly cleanse the sand.
In the drawings, Aindicates a filtering-tank of any desired form, niateriah'and construction. The gel r-wheel G is preferably formed integral with vthe sleeve 13, as shown in the drawings; but, if desired, it may he rigidly attached to the sleeve inany suitable manner. Through the sleeve B passes a rotating shaft 1), which carricsa verticallymovable gear-wheel E, which is provided with afeather to prevent its rotation upon the shaft I). The gear-wheel E intermeshes with another gear-wheel E, provided with a wheel l by means of which it may be rotated. The various wheels and theshaft D are supported by a frame G at the top of the tank A. The combination, with a filtering-tank A, of a pendent sleeve 13, suspended from the top wall of the tank and having ,a fixed gearwheel 0 at its lower end, a frame G, arranged above the tank, a vertieally-movable shaft D, extending through the sleeve and frame and having a screw-threaded upper end, a horizontal cross-bar H, secured to the shaft below the sleeve an-l having gear-wheels which it main in mesh with the fixed gear-wheel as the shaft and cross-bar are raised and lowered, the agitator-arms I, jonrnaled in the cross-bar and geared to the gear-wheels carried by the latter, a gear-wheel E, mounted on the shaft within the frame above the tank and through which wheel the shaft is adapted to move lengthwise, a gear-wheel E, carried. by the frame, a drive-pulley F, and a handwheel B, engaging the screw-threadedportion of the shaft above the frame, substantially as described.
