FREDERICK E. R. MALKE, OF CI-IRISNEY, INDIANA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,667, dated .T une 28, 1892..
Application filed January 13, 1892.
To alZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. R. MALKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at `Chrisney, in the county of Spencer and State and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View ot a gate embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. p
1 designates an upright arranged at one side of a gateway, and 2 designates nprights arranged at the opposite side of the gateway and forming between them a space to receive a sliding gate 3, which has its outer end provided with vertical bars 4, extended upward above` the gate and depending from a trackbar 5. The track-bar 5 is arranged horizontally within a casing 6, which connects the upper ends of the uprights 1 and 2 and protects the track-bar from snow and rain. The upper portions of the bar 4 diverge and are spaced by a triangular block 7, and are provided attheir upper ends with rollers S, which are arranged at opposite sides of the track and are adapted to pass a central supporting bolt or rod 9, which secures the track-bar at an intermediate point to the casing 6.
The inner end of the gate is pivoted at the top to the upper ends of oscillating levers 10, which are arranged on opposite sides of the gate, and have their lower ends fulcrumed beyond the gate when the latter isclosed, and are adapted to open and close the same.' The uprights and the casing form aframe to which is secured a horizontal supporting-bar 1l, extending from opposite sides of the gate and forming means for fulcruming operating-le- Serial No. 417,978. (No model.)
vers 12. The inner ends of the operating-le vers 12 are connected together and to a lever 13 at a point intermediate the ends of the latter, which has one end fulcrumed between the uprights 2, and has its other end connected by links 14 with the oscillating levers 10. The links 14 are composed of rods and have their lower ends secured to the oscillating levers at intermediate points. The upper ends of the links are connected to the ends of a cross-piece 15, which is secured to the lever 13. The outer ends of the oscillating levers are provided with depending ropes or handles, and the gate is operated by raising and lowering the operating-levers.
It will be seen that the means for operating the gate are simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and are positive and reliable in operation.
The upright lis provided near its lower end with blocks 16, which when the gate is shut prevent the same from being forced to one side by wind or cattle.
1. The combination of horizontal track-bar, a gate having its outer end suspended from the track-bar, the oscillating levers lO, having' their lower ends fulcruined and their upper ends pivotetl at the top of the gate, the lever 13, having one end fulcrumed on the frame, the links connecting the other end of the lever 13 with the oscillating levers, and the operating-levers having their inner ends connected to the lever 13, substantially as described. 4 2. The combination of a frame, a horizontal track-bar, a central supporting-bolt depending from' the frame and secured to the trackbar, a gate, vertical bars 4, rising from the gate and having their upper portions diverging and arranged on opposite sides of the track-bar, the triangular block spacing the bars 4, and the rollers journaled on theinner faces of the upper ends of the bar 4 and arranged on the track-bar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK E. R. MALKE.
