Description

N. PETERS, PHOYWLITNOGRAPNER WASHiNGYON D C UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE.,
IVM. T. SLOGUM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification.forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,752, dated May 16, 1865.`
` .Tr all whom lzit may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. SLocUM, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full7 clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in a tobacco-pipe with the usual bowl, combined with a stem having a perforated projection and a detachable reservoir, 4the said stem being so divided by a partition that the smoke from thetobacco must pass from one portion of the stem into the reservoir before again entering the stem, and so that the moisture from the upper portion of the latter may collect in the reservoir without descending into the bowl. i
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make my invention,I will now proceed to describe its construction.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional view of my improved tobaccopipe, and Fig. 2 a plan view.
A is the bowl ofthe pipe, which` may be of Vany suitable form, and to which is connected the lower end of a stem, B, the latter being provided with the usual mouth-piece, C.
Across the interior of the stem B, near the lower end of the same, extends a partition, a, and at the under side of the stern, directly below this partition, is a projection, b, on which are cut threads adapted to those in the neck of a detachable cup or reservoir, E.
In the projection b are two openings, m and x', one of which communicates with the opening in the stem above the partition a and the other with the opening below the said partition, both openings communicating with the interior of the reservoir E. The smoke from the burningtobacco passes, first, into the opening in the stem below the partition a, down the openingan in the projection b, into the reservoir E, from the latter through the opening zr', into the opening in the stem abovethe partition a, and through the mouth-piece to the mouth of the smoker.- I
In consequence of theextended surface with 'which the smoke is thus `brought into contact, it is considerably cooled before reaching the mouth, while the moisture which collects in the upper portion of the stem iiows from the latter through the opening x into the reservoir, which may be detached and cleansed as frequently as required. y
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The stem B, with its partition a, projection b, and openings m and x', in combination with the detachable reservoir E and the bowl A, substantially as and for 'the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
wM. T. sLoorIM.
