H. D. PERRY. GLAMP FOR LUGGAGE CARRIERS FOR VELOGIPBDES. No. 476,948. Patented June 14, 1892.
vIrwentor- I Witnessei 27 UNITED STATES PATENT Grricn.
RICHARD D. PERRY, OF ELYRIA, OHIO.
CLAMP FOR LUGGAGE-CARRIERS FOR VELOCIPEDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters JPatent N0. 76,948, dated June 14, 1892.
Application filed March 7, l 8 92.
T0 (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im' provements in Clamps for Luggage-Carriers for Velocipedes, of which the following is a specification, that will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make use of the same.
My invention relates to a clamp for attaching luggage-carriers to the front post or head or other suitable part of a velocipede; and its object is to provide a clamp that can be attached without removing or detaching either end of the brake-rod by separating the front part of the clamp and passing same by the brake-rod standing in front of the head of the ordinary Safety bicycle. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing; but the construction can be modified and varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The figure shows a plan view of my invention as applied to the section of the head of an ordinary Safety bicycle.
A represents a cross-section of the front post or head of an ordinary Safety bicycle to which my clamp is to be attached. a represents a cross'section of the brake-rod to said ordinary Safety bicycle.
a a and a represent sections of a luggageearrier, which sections, if continued or extended, would form one piece, the section a being and remaining forward of the brakerod to, the other parts a a extendingon each side, and with the ends of the clamp Z) Z) en tirely inclosing the brake-rod a.
Z) 1) represent the front sections of my clamp, and 1) represents the rear section. The rear section is provided with a set-screw s for se curing same, as desired.
The ends of the sections of my clamp a a and CL are each provided with any desired interlocking construction or mechanism by which all are securely held together when drawn together by means of the set-screw s. This clamp may be made in two sections only; but one place of separation must be between the points of attachment of the ends of the frame a and a. and the other outside of these points.
Serial No, 424,024. (No model.)
The operation of my invention is as follows, to wit: When it is desired to attach my clamp to the head of a Safety bicycle provided with a front brake-rod, the parts I) h and Z) are separated and the parts Z) and I) sprung apart far enough to pass by the brake-rod a, when they are interlocked and placed in position against the head of the bicycle. The part b is then interlocked with the free ends of the parts Z) l) by sliding or slipping the same together end wise, and then by turning up the set-screw the same is all strongly bound and held together. To take the same off or disengage it, the operations are simply reversed. It is well known that brake-rods are attached at both their lower and upper ends to the head of a Safety bicycle, and heretofore it has been found necessary in luggage-carriers to detach one end of the brake-rod and pass the same through the opening formed by the parts a ct and a," and sections Z) Z) of the clamp, which made considerable trouble and inconvenience. By means of my invention this; is avoided, and the parts I) b of my clamp separate and spring open sufficiently to pass the brake-rod, after which same are united and secured, as above stated.
Having fully described my invention and its operations, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. In a luggage-carrier for velocipedes, the combination of the frame thereof and a sec tional and interlocking clamp for securing same as desired one section being attached to one arm of the frame and another section to another corresponding arm of the frame, and all so constructed as to interlock with each other and any other or further sections provided for forming a complete clamp, all as above set forth, and substantially as described.
2. In a clamp for a luggage-carrier for a velocipede, in combination with the frame thereof, a clamp consisting of two or more sections provided with interlocking hooks at each end of each section, whereby the sections will be capable of being separated or interlocked at a point between the points of attachment of the arms a a of the frame, all as above set forth, and substantially as described.
3. In a sectional clamp for a luggage'carrier for a velocipede, sections provided with attachment of the ends a a of the frame, all hooks or other mechanism for interlocking, as above set forth, and substantially as dein combination with each other and provided scribed.
with a separating place between the points of RICHARD D. PERRY. attachment of the ends of the frame a a, Witnesses:
whereby two of said sections may be separated H. E. CORNING,
or interlocked at a point between the points of E. C. MANTER.
