CANDLE-SHADE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,790, dated May 31, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MORAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candle-Shade Holders, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the candle-shade holder as applied to a candle. Fig. 2 is a modification of the holder. Fig. 3 is another modification. Fig. 4 is still another modification.

This my invention relates to that class of candle-shade holders which automatically descend and maintain their relative position with the flame of the candle as the candle burns; and it consists of two half -sleeves movably connected or pivoted to one onother, to one of which sleeves there is attached a rest or support which bears on the upper end of the candle, these three parts being so arranged that the holding up or support of the rest will cause the two half-sleeves to approach one another and grasp the candle, and the various modifications and combinations hereinafter specified and contained.

The shade-holder consists of a half-sleeve A of the proper size to go on a candle and encircle it, attached to which half-sleeve is the other half-sleeve, (shown in Fig. 1,) 00111- posed of the parts B and 0, connected to one another by the connectingpieces D. The shade-holder or upright H, attached to the half-sleeve A, bears the shade proper. The pieces B and O are fastened to the half-sleeve A at the joints 7' j and in the connectingpiece D by the joints or pivots jj. The two half-sleeves thus fastened together are of sufficient internal size to admit the free movement of the candle therein until the rest cZ comes in contact with the top of the candle, which rest cZ, being attached to the half-sleeve B and 0, supports the outer points of the rings B O and makes the connecting-piece D approach the half-sleeve A until the halfsleeve A and the piece D bear against the sides of the candle. The candle-shade holder is maintained in this position until the gradual burning away of the candle releases the rest d and allows the half-sleeve B C to fall down with the rest cZ until the rest d, comes in contact with the candle. The half-sleeve A having also descended by it own weight when the half-sleeve B C descended, the two half-sleeves are again drawn toward one an other by the support under the rest (Z and firmly held to the candle.

Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the half-sleeve A, to which the candle-shade support H is attached, has pivoted to it a haltsleeve B at or about its center. To the halfsleeve B is attached the upright or connecting-piece D, having the rest cZ attached to it. The circle made by the two half-sleeves A and B is of such size as to freely pass over the candle until the rest (Z comes in contact with the top, when the halt-sleeve B will be forced toward the half-sleeve A until the half-sleeves A and B grasp the candle.

Fig. 3 consists of the two half-sleeves A and B, which are connected to one another by the links F F, two of which are pivoted to the half-sleeves on each side thereof, so that the two half-sleeves will be maintained in a parallel position to one another. The shadeholder H is attached to the half-sleeve A and the rest (Z is attached to the half-sleeve B. The rest (Z supports the half-sleeve B when it comes in contact with the top of the candle, which causes the two half-sleeves to approach one another until they grasp the candle.

Fig. 4 consists of the two half-sleeves. A and B. B has formed on it lugs K, two on each side, each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot. The lugs are projected upward at an angle of about thirty degrees. On the half-sleeve A are provided four pins, two on each side, one fitting into each slot in the lugs K. The half-sleeve A is attached to the shade-holder H and the half-sleeve B to the rest (Z. \Vhen the rest (Z comes in contact with the top of the candle as the shade-holder fits thereon, the half-sleeve B will be supported against the candle and the half-sleeve A will be drawn in against the other side of the candle by the pins sliding in the slots of the lugs K until the two half-sleeves grasp the candle.

WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A candle-shade holder provided with two candle-engaging parts movably connected together and adapted to be forced together upon the candle by gravity, and a supportingrest secured to one part, substantially as described.

2. In a candle-shade holder, the combination, with a part adapted to engage vertical portions of a candle and provided with a supporting-rest, of another candle-engaging part movably connected with said supported part, the Weight of said latter part tending to force said parts together upon the candle, substantially as described.

3. In a candle-shade holder, the combination, with a part adapted to engage a vertical portion of the candle and provided with a supporting-rest, of another candle-engaging part movably connected with said supported part by pivotal connections,tl1e weight of said latter part tending to force said parts together upon the-candle, substantially as described.

4. The combination, in a candle shade holder, of two half-sleeves movably connected with one another, so that they are parallel in all positions, one provided with a rest, the support of which will cause the half-sleeves to approach one another, as specified and set forth.

5. The combination, in a candleshade holder, of the half-sleeve A and half-sleeve B O, pivoted thereto and having pivoted to them the connection D and rest d, substantially as specified.
