(M B 0 ELLRIGH COMBINED STANDARD AND CLAMP.
Patented May 17, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT O F E.
ROBERT C. ELLRICI-I, OF ILANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED STANDARD AND CLAMP.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,054, dated May 1'7, 1892.
Application filed October 2 1891. Serial No. 407,588: (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT C. ELLRIOH, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in a Combined Standard and Clamp; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a view in side elevation of a combined standard and clamp applied to the temporary attachment of a rotary meat-cutter to the edge of a table; Fig. 2, a broken view'in vertical section, showing the sleeve of the standard and the upper end of the clamp together with the post of the meat-cutter; Fig. 3, a broken view, partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation, showing the use of the standard alone to permanently secure the meat'cutter to a table; Fig. 4E, detached front view of the standard; Fig. 5, a similar view of the clamp.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined standards and clamps particularly designed for rotary meat-cutters, but not lim ited to such use, the object being to produce a simple, strong, and effective device adapted to be converted for permanently or temporarily attaching a meat-cutter or other instrument to a table or bench. V b
With these ends in view myinvention consists in a standard having a vertical sleeve formed with a threaded horizontal boss and two feet offsetting from the lower end of said sleeve and each adapted to be permanently attached to a table or bench, in combination with a clamp having the lower end of its body turned inward and furnished with a vertical clamping-screw and its upper end provided with a horizontal coupling-screw, the faces of the upper end of the clamp and of the boss of the standard being constructed to be interlocked when drawn together by the said coupling-screw.
The standard 'of my improved device consists of a vertical sleeve A and two feet B B, offsetting from its. lower end and sufficiently spread apart to secure a wide bearing, the lower ends of the said feet being provided with screw-holes C to receive screws for the permanent attachment of the standard to a table, bench, or other similar object. The sleeve of the standard is adapted to receive a cylindrical post D, integral with or attached to the meat-cutter, which may of course be of any construction. The meat-cutter herein shown has a cylindrical horizontal receiver E and a hopper F. The said post is secured within the sleeve by means of a set-screw having bearing in a small hub H,formedintegral with and offsetting from the sleeve at a right angle to the length thereof. I do not, however, limit myself to any particular mode of securing the post within the sleeve, although the set-screw described and shown is perhaps as simple and convenient a way as can be devised. The sleeve is provided at its lower end with a horizontal boss I, cylindrical in form and nearly as large as the sleeve in diameter. This boss is provided with a threaded longitudinal bore and has a deep notch J formed in its outer face, which is flat. Preferably the standard described will be cast in one piece. The clamp, which is also cast in one piece of metal and longitudinally ribbed at its edges to make it light and strong, has the lower end of its body K turned inward and furnished with a vertical threaded bore to receive the clamping-screw L, which is furnished at its inner end with a clamping-plate M to increase the area of its engagement with the under face of the bench or table to which it is applied. The upper end of the said body is provided with a horizontal threaded bore to receive the coupling-screw N and with a flat face 0 and a rib P, the latter being adapted to enter the notch J, formed in the flat face of the boss I of the standard, so as tolock the standard and clamp together when the said faces are brought together by means of the couplingscrew N.
WVhen it isdesired to attach the meat-cutter permanently in place, the standard alone is used and permanently fixed to the tableor bench by screwing it thereto, the clamp being at this time detached from it by removing the coupling-screw N. WVhen, however, it is desired to secure the cutter in place only temporarily, the clamp and standard are oombined by means of the coupling-screw N and used as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings. In
such use the feet of the standard form wide bearings for the support of the meat-cutter; but they are not screwed to the table or bench. Inasmuch as the standard and clamp are very readily coupled and uncoupled, myimproved device is very readily converted for use one way or the other. The standard when used alone has all the advantages of ordinary standards for the permanent attachment of a meat-cutter to abench or table, and when combined with the clamp it produces an excellent member for engagement with the upper surface of the table or bench on account of the spread of its feet.
While I have shown myimproved device in connection with a rotary meat-cutter, it will be clear that it is equally applicable to be used with any instrument designed to be permanently or temporarily attached to a table or bench and used in the same way that a meatcutter is used.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A standard having a vertical sleeve formed with a threaded horizontal boss and two feet offsetting from the lower end of said sleeve and each adapted to be permanently attached to a table or bench, in combination with a clamp having the lower end of its body turned inward and furnished with a vertical clamping-screw and its upper end provided with a horizontal coupling-screw, the faces of the upper end of the clamp and of the boss of the standard being constructed to be interlocked when drawn together by the said coupling screw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
