APPLE-CORER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,077, dated May 3, 1892.
Application filed August 19, 1891. Serial No. 403,081. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BoUTELL,
of Fort Payne, in the county of De Kalb and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apple Corers, of which the following is a specification.
This is a device for coring an apple, and is particularly adapted to be applied to and used in connection with apple-paring machines, more especially, but not exclusively, those which were patented September 16, 1884, and June 25, 1885). Apple-paring machines usually require both a corer and a fork.
By means of my improved corer the fork may be done away with, as the corer itself holds the apple while being pared.
The accompanying drawing shows a view in perspective of myimproved apple-corer or apple-coring attachment.
It consists, essentially, of a shank A and a blade or knife B, rigidly secured to or integral with said shank. This knife or blade is made of thin metal in the spiral or screw shape shown, so that a spiral or screw-shaped slot 13 is produced.
The operation is as follows: The apple is held in the hand. of the operator and pressed against the outer end of the blade or knife B of the corer. The corer is then rotated by the application of any suitable mechanism to its shank A. By means of the screw-shaped slot B the blade of the corer passes through the apple, separating the core therefrom, eX- cept where the slot is. The operator then lets go of the apple and puts the paring-machine in motion, thereby paring the apple. The portion of the apple above referred to which is not separated from the core holds or prevents the apple from slipping on the corer while being pared. The apple is then removed from the corer by a suitable lever which pushes it off the corer longitudinally instead of screwing it off, thus causing the corer to complete the operation of cutting the core from the apple and leaving the core in the corer. The core is removed therefrom by being forced through by the next apple. Thus it will be seen that no fork is required for holding the apple while being pared, as during the paring process my corer has not completely severed the core from the apple, as it has been rotated only, the complete separation of the core from the apple being effected only after the apple has been pared, as above described.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described im provedapple-coring device, consisting, essentially, of the shank or handle A and spiral blade B, connected to and extending therefrom, said spiral blade forming a screw-shaped slot B, whereby when the corer is rotated the core is but partially separated from the apple, substantially as set forth.
