WILLIAM II. EDSALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
ADJUSTABLE JOINT FOR DISPLAY-FRAIVIES.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,919, dated May 3, 1892. Application tiled January 29,1892. Serial No. 419,626. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may con/007%.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM I-I. EDsALL, a Iesident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Joints for Display-Frames and other Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invent-ion relates to certain new and useful improvements in joints for displayframes and other purposes; and it consists in the combination of a ratchet and pawl with a spring-pressed slide for locking said pawl, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side view, partly sectional, of the improved joint, showing the arm elevated and held in place by the pawl and slide. Fig. 2 is a similai- View of the improved joint, showing the arm depressed and out of contact with the pawl-supporting mechanism; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 8, Fig. l.
A represents one of the uprights or supports of the frame.
B is one of the arms supported thereon and adapted to hold transverse rods b in suitable notches h2. This arm B is pivoted by a pin d within a suitable casing D, which in turn is clamped to the upright A by a suitable clamp d2, or otherwise fastened thereto. The end of the arm B, which is pivoted to and held within the casing D, is furnished with ratchet-teeth a. Near this ratchet a is piv oted to the casing D a pawl F, having teeth and notches ff, adapted to fit against the notches and teeth of the ratchet a. This pawl F can be looked by a slide G, which slides within the casing D and which is by preference wedge-shaped, as shown, and has a handle 7L, projecting through a slot e in the casing D. This handle h can be reached by the linger of the operator, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. A spring g can be applied to the slide G to hold it normally n the locked position shown in Fig. 1.
In operation the casing D is first clamped or otherwise fastened to the upright A at a suitable height- The slide G is then pushed outward and the pawl F released from contact with the ratchet-teeth a on the arm B either by gravity or otherwise, so that the arm B is free to be moved on its pivot. The arm B is then elevated or lowered to the required angle, whereupon the finger is removed from the handle 7L of the slide G, which is then pressed inward by the spring g, the wedge or cam shaped slide serving to crowd the teethf of the pawl Finto the teeth 0f the ratchet a. The arm B is then iirmly locked and held in its proper position and cannot be raised or lowered until the slide G is iirst pressed outward and the pawl released from contact with the ratchet. For use on displayframes the invention is particularly useful, as itprevents the accidental displacement of the arms B in either direction.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of the pivoted arm B, having ratchet-teeth CL, with the pawl F, and with the slide G, adapted to lock said pawl to said ratchetteeth, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pivoted arm B, having ratchet-teeth a, with the pawl F, and with the slide G, adapted to lock said pawl to said ratchet-teeth, and with the spring g, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the casing D, having slot c, with the slide G, having handle h, protruding th rough said slot e, and with the pawl F, and pivoted arm B, having ratchet-teeth a., all arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
4.. The combination of the upright A, with the casing D, carriedthereby, and with the arm B, pivoted in said casing and having ratchetteeth @,md with the pawl F and spring-controlled slide G, arranged Within said easing D, said slide being adapted to hold said pawl F in contact with the ratchet-teeth of said arm B, substantially as described.
, WILLIAM H. EDSALL.
