H. G. WEATHERILL.
REIN HOLDER.
No. 473,684. Patented Apr. 26, 1892-.
0., WASHXNGTOH n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY GUY WEATHERILL, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,684, dated April 26, 1892.
Application filed July '7, 1891. $erlal No. 398,696. (No model.)
ILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in rein-holders; and the objects are to provide a holder which will keep the reins suspended above the animal and to provide a simple and cheap device which will hold the reins securely and at the same time enable the driver to easily and quickly remove or detach the same.
With these ends in view my invention consists of the improved rein-holder constructed as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the holder in position. 2 is a side elevation of the holder, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
My improved rein-holder is bent or formed from a single piece of wire rod to of the desired length and diameter. This holder consists of a straight rigid shank B, having the upper portion screw-threaded to enable it to be readily screwed into the under side of the bar A, forming a part of the top of the vehicle, to which the holder can be attached. At the opposite end of this rigid attaching-shank the wire a is bent at an angle to said shank and extends rearwardly a short distance, as at b, and saidwire rod to then extends downwardly and is coiled upon itself to form the coil 0, after which the free end of the wire is passed rearwardly and forms a curved arm (I, the upper side of which is adapted to contact with the lower side or surface of the bar or rib A in rear of the shank B, and the free end of the curved holding-arm lies in a plane below that of the top of the coil o.-
In using my improved holder the reins are slipped over the curved arm d below the bar A and they pull or strain against the rigid shank B. To release the reins from the holder,
it is only necessary to grasp the same a short distance below the end and pull downwardly and rearwardly thereon, which draws the curved arm cl into a plane below the top of the coil 0, and thus permits the reins to slip easily from the curved arm.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and inexpensive holder which keeps the reins in such a position that it is impossible for them to become tangled with the horses tail or interfere with the movements of the driver and that the driver can readily remove or disengage the same from the holder.
I attach special importance to the peculiar manner of bending the wire to provide an intermediate coil between a rigid attaching-arm and a yielding curved arm which lies substantially at right angles to the plane of the rigid attaching-arm, as I am thereby enabled to provide a simple and inexpensive device which fulfills the practical requirements of ready attachment of the device to the vehicle-top, easy connection of the reins to the holder, their ready detachment by hand, and the safe suspension of the reins out of the Way of the driver in leaving or entering the vehicle.
I am aware of Patent No. 381,608, granted April 24, 1888, to Beisonhert, which shows a holder formed from a single piece of wire and adapted to be attached to a dash by means of nuts, and such construction Ido not claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A rein-holder formed from a single piece of wire and provided with the rigid screw-shank B, the short straight section 1), extending at an angle to the shank, the coils o, and the curved yielding arm (1, extending at right angles to the shank B, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY GUY W'EATI-IERILL.
