ENVELOPE FOR MAILING PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 471,846, dated March 29, 1892. Application led .Tune 1,1891. Serial No. 394,723. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. MACKIN- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes for Mailing Packages; and I do hereby declare the followingl to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to envelopes for mailmatter; and its object is to provide a safe and convenient package for fragile articles, with a convenient flap for addressing the package, canceling the stamp, and impressing the seal of the post-office thereon. I have also provided a fastening device which adapts it to be used as an unsealed envelope'and which may be supplemented by sealing-wax, mucilage, or other adhesive matter when it is desired to send the package as a sealed envelope. Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters.
Figure lrepresents a perspective view of the device after being mailed. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the Wrapper and the portion of the box glued thereon or otherwise attached thereto. Fig. 3 represents one portion of the box, in this case the top, and the means of attaching the wrapper and eye thereto. Fig. e represents an enlarged perspective view of the other portion of the box, in this case the bottom.
A represents a blank of paper, linen, Aor other suitable material glued or otherwise fastened tothe top B of a box of pasteboard, tin, Wood, or any suitable material and of any convenient shape. It is immaterial whether the said blank of paper be attached to the top B or to the bottom or body B of the box. The blank A has wings or flaps c, adapted to turn ,up over the ends of the box, whileits outer end is cut into a long tongue a', which is bent back upon itself to give a double thickness and .increased strength. The double thickness is pressed or glued together. Between the two thicknesses a reinforce of linen CL2 or other similar material may be glued or otherwise secured. The eye C may be attached to the blank A or box B, or to both, in
any convenient way.
For the paper-fastener D, I have shown a perforated paper disk d', Fig. 2, glued to the tongue c', and through this disk the prongs of the paper-fastener may be inserted; but any other means of attaching the said paperfastener to the said tongue may be adopted,
or it may be simply pushed through the paper i The operation of my device is as follows:
The article having been packed in the box and the cover put on as usual, the Iiaps u, are
turned up over the ends of the box and the blank A is wrapped once around the box, when the prongs of the paper-fastener D are pushed through the eyelet C and then bent over, securely engaging the wrapper. VThe package may be sealed before or after bending over the said prongs. It will be seen that it will be impossible by any ordinary accident to detach the box from its wrapper. Moreover, the strong mailing tag or tongue will enable the address yto be'conveniently written, the stamp applied, and the package to be conveniently postmarked, the stamp canceled, dto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In an envelope for mailing packages, the combination of a box made in a plurality of superimposable sections, a wrapper A, attached to one of those sections and having iiaps a and tongue a', with a fastening device attached, respectively, to the base of said tongue and to the said section of said box, substantially as described.
2. In an envelope for mailing packages, the combination, with a box composed of two superimposable sections, of the wrapper A, attached to one of said sections and having the the flaps @,double tongue d', and fastening force a2, and fastening devices C and D, subdeviccs C and D, substantially as described. stantially as described.
3. lu an envelope for mailing packages, the ln testimony whereof I ax my signature in combination, with a rectangular box connpresence of two Witnesses. 5 posed of two superimposable sections, a top, HERBERT G. MACKINNEY.
and a bottom or body of theboX, of the Wrap Witnesses: per A, attached to one of said sections and T. FRANK SINMAN, having the iiaps a, doubled tongue a', rein- FRANK R. MAY.
