DRAW-BAR FO'R CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,530, dated March 29, 1892.
Application filed October 28, 1891. serial No. 410,127. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS BARIL, of Arthabaskaville, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gonnectiug Railway-Oars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part. hereof.
My invention, which Will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, relates to the construction and mode of attaching the draw-bars to cars and carriages.
The object of my invention is to reduce the strain on cars and other rolling-stock in passing curves, and thereby reduce the haulingpower required and the fuel consumed; also, to prevent the rocking motion of single cars to be communicated to the adjoining cars in the same train; also, to avoid any strain on ends of the rollingstock due to tractive force.

3 is an end view of the same with the drawhead in section, and Fig. 4 is a diagram showing a train of cars connected according to my invention passing over a curve.

A is a central cross-beam specially provided for the purpose and rigidly secured midway between the ends, or anyexisting beam, either longitudinal or transverse, providing a solid support in the center of the frame, may be utilized.
B B are two draw-bars, each extendingfrom the center of the car to one of the ends, being provided with an eye I) at the inner end, by which both are pivoted to the center of the central support A by means of a bolt or pin C. The outer end of each draw-bar is provided either with an ordinary draw-head b for the ordinary link couplings and pin or with any other car-coupling that may be desired or preferred. In order to pass the kingbolt of a truck or bogie without deviating from the central line, a loop or ring b is provided in the bar sufficiently spacious to allow the necessary lateral play or'deviation. If the draw-bar or draw-head passes through the end beam 0., a horizontal slot of sufficient length is provided to allow the draw-bar to deviate from the central line so much that two coupled bars on opposite ends of adjacent cars may assume a straight line when passing over the sharpest curve, as shown in Fig. 4. When not passing through the end beam, a special bracket D, allowing the same accommodation, is provided. Intermediate supports D may be provided to carry the drawbar. To the bearing-surfaces of these, as well as to those of the end support or the bottom of the slot in the end beam, a concave line is given, which tends to gravitate the draw-bar to the center. For the latter purpose side springs having just suflioient power to push the draw-bar in the center may also be employed.
It will be observed that in cars constructed with draw bars as described all strain in traction is taken off the ends of the cars and transferred to the central point of the frame of each, that each end of the car becomes free from the'influence and motion of the other and is not compelled to participate in any rocking or other involuntary and undesirable movement, thatjts movement on the rails becomes free and more easy on curves, that less tractive force is necessary in hauling, and
that economy in fuel must therefore ensue.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a railway-car A, of a central support A, a bolt 0 in the center of said support, and two draw-bars B, each having an eye at one end engaged by the pivot-bolt and extending with its other end to the end of the car and provided at that end With a draw-head b, said draw-bars provided with large eyes or loops 1) to pass the king-bolt of the truck and supported in slots or brackets D, having concavely-curved bearing-surfaces, substantially as set forth.
