J. I? Jam? MM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN VVELISOH, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTABLE PICK-POINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,853, dated March 15, 1892.
Application filed October 6, 1891. Serial No. 407,856, (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, HERMAN WELISCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful 1m proveinents in Adjustable Pick- Points; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to picks; and it consists in forming the ends of the pick proper with sockets in which points are adapted to be removably inserted; and inyinvention also consists in the construction of the said points and the means for securing the points in the sockets, all of which will be presently fully set forth.
Reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an elevation of a pick having my improved detachable points thereon. Fig. 2 is adetail of one of the points detached; Fig. 3, a detail of one of the ends of the pick; Fig. 4, details of the bolt and nut for connecting the parts; and Fig.5,a section enlarged through line w 00, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several figures of the drawlngs.
A denotes the pick proper, which is pro vid'ed with a suitable handle B, connected thereto by a bolt C or other suitable fastenin g. In the ends of the pick are formed sockets a, preferably rectangular in shape, which receive and hold the correspondingly-shaped spindles cl on the points D. Holes e in the pick correspond with holes f in the spindles, and are countersunk, as at e, to receive the bolt-head gand nut g on the connecting-bolt g. This construction permits of the ready insertion and removal of points of different sizes or shapes or of the inserting of sharpened points in place of dull or worn points.
.My invention also provides a very strong and rigid connection, which is not liable to get out of order or be broken, and which is not exposed to wear.
I claim In a pick, the combination, with a pick proper having rectangular sockets in its ends and holes countersunk, as described, of points having spindles conforming in shape to the said sockets and having holes registering with the holes in the pick, a bolt having a head adapted to fit one of the countersunk holes in the pick, and a screw-nut for the other countersunk hole, having a reduced tapering portion operating with said bolt to hold the points in place, as set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
