CLARK HOLDEN, OF BARRE, VERMONT.
BUSH-HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,570, dated March 8, 1892. Application filed July 30, 1891. Serial No. 401,182 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 0
Be it known that I, CLARK HOLDEN of Barre,
in the county of Washington andState of Vermont, have invented anew and Improved Bush-Hammer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of tlie'invention is to provide a new and improved bush-hammer which is simple and durable in construction, securely holds the blades in position, and permits of conveniently separating the several parts to take out the blades for sharpening or other purposes.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar. letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in allthe figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the iniproveinent. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on theline 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig.
3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the gibs. I
The improved bush-hammer is provided with thetwo body-plates A and A, arranged opposite each other and formed at their inner sides at the middle with bosses B and B, respectively, having a groove extending transversely to form an eye 0 for the handle of the hammer. At the ends of the bossesB and B are arranged the transversely-extending gibs D and D, provided at their middle with inwardly-extending ton gues-D and D respectively, fitting into a corresponding V-shaped groove E, arranged longitudinally in the adjacent faces of the bosses B and B. Bolts F and Fpass through the body-platesAAaud the tongues D D to securely hold the plates and gibs in position. Opposite the tongues D a'nd D are arranged grooves D and D respectively, in the gibs D and D, respectively, the said grooves being engaged by tongues G G formed on the inner ends of the sets of cutting-blades G G, held between the outer ends of the body-plates A A.
In order to fasten the cutting-blades G G, sets of bolts H H, respectively, are employed, passing'through the bod y-plates A A and the said sets of cutting-blades, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. It will be seen that by this arrangement the gibs D D are securely held in place between the body-plates A A, as all lateral motion is prevented by the tongues D D engaging the longitudinal slot E in the bosses'B B. A like motion of the sets of cutting-blades G G is prevented by the said cutting-blades engaging with their tongues G G the grooves D D in the gibs D D.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bush-hammer comprising oppositelyarranged body-plates having central bosses and transverse. gibs fitted between the said plates on the ends of the bosses, each gib being provided with a tongue fitting into a lon itudinal roove formed in the said bosses,
and bolts passing through the said bodyplates and through the said gibs to hold the body-plates and gibs in position, substantially as shown and described. i
2. A bush-hammer comprising oppositelyarranged body-plates having central bosses and transverse gibs. fitted between the said plates on the ends of the bosses, each gib being provided with a tongue fitting into alongitudinal groove formed in the said bosses,
sets of cutting-blades formed with tongues engaging grooves in the said gibs, and bolts for fastening the said gibs to the said bodyplates, and bolts for fastening the sets of blades between the body-plates, substantially as shown and'described.
