N. A. OHANEY. CHAIN GUTTER.
No. 470,103. Patented Mar. 1, 1892.
3 513- ?H' (lite cum and the shank d UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN ALEXANDER OHANEY, OF CADIZ, OHIO.
CHAIN CUTTER. I
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. {170,103, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed August 15, 1891. Serial No. 402,740. (No model.)
To all whomzt may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN ALEXANDER OHANEY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cadiz, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Chain Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chain cutters for boring and mortising machines.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a cutter of the character set forth in which the parts can be readily replaced at a small cost and removed for purposes of sharpening.
The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan or front view of a cutter-chain embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan or rear view of the cutterchain. Fig. 3 is a side viewof the invention. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the spur-cutter. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the chisel or knife cutter.
The cutter-chain is composed of links A, spur-cutters B, and knife or chisel cutters D. The spur and the knife or chisel cutters are alternately arranged in the length of the chain and are held in place by the same pivots or pins which hold the links together. The spur-cutter is composed of cross-bar b, of proper length, round on its front or active side, and having spurs b at its ends and shank b projected from its rear side, which shank is apertured to receive the pin which connects the links together. The spurs flare slightly from the base of the bar to their cutting-edges to cut a mortise which shall be slightly wider than the length of bar I) or knife or chisel cutter D, thereby preventing binding of the latter in the said mortise.
The knife or chisel cutter is composed of the blade d, which curves in cross-section,
at the inner edge of the blade, which shank is apertured to receive the pin which connects the links A together. The portions of the aforesaid cutters which project on each side of the shank overlap the links and obtain a purchase thereon sufficient to hold the said cutters in position for efficient service and project beyond the sides of the chain to prevent binding of the latter on the sides of the mortise.
The links are similarly constructed and comprise a bar, which is deflected between its ends to bring the end portions in relatively different planes, whereby when the links are assembled and connected in series, as shown, the strain on thelinks will be practically in a straight line. Thelinks are preferably cast, although they may be drop-forged or otherwise constructed, and are strengthened at the point of deflection by the overlapping portion a.
In the operation of the invention the spurs cut the wood on each side of the mortise and the knives or chisel-cutters remove the wood between the said cuts. Obviously the links, the spur, and the knife or chisel cutters being independent of each other, any one can be removed and replaced without disturbing the other.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A chain cutter composed of independent links, and separate spur and knife or chisel cutters, and pivots or pins connecting the links and the said cutters together, substantially as shown.
2-. A chain cutter composed of links, knife or chisel cutters, and spur-cutters, the latter comprising a cross-bar having spurs at its ends, and a longitudinally-apertured shank which receives the pin that connects the links of the chain, substantially as described.
3. A chain-cutter composed of links, and chisel or knife cutters, which are composed of a blade curved in cross-section, and a longitudinally-apertured shank, and a pin connecting the links and the said cutters together, substantially as described.
4. A chain cutter composed of links, each deflected between its ends link being a bar substantially as and for the purpose described.
x o In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NATHAN ALEXANDER (JIIANEY.
