Description
UNITED STATES LEONARD J. M. NEHF AND GEORGE IV. MITCHELL, OF SUTTON, NEBRASKA.
PATENT ()FFIcE.
CU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 69,588,dated February 23, 1892.
' Application filed Aug11st4,1891. smart. 401,704. (No model.)
To aZl whom it 11mg concern: 1
Be it known that we, LEONARD J. M. NEHF and GEORGE W. MITCHELL, of Sutton, in the county of Clay and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to cultivators, and more particularly to an improved adjusting device whereby the shovels can be adjusted to suit the growth and condition of the plants to be cultivated.
The object of our invention is to provide a device of this character that shall be exceedingly cheap and simple in construction and convenient in operation.
With these objects in view our invention consists in the details of construction and combination of the various parts, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 8 is a detail View of the plow-carrying frame.
In carrying out our invention we employ a main beam 10,'having a clevis 10 at its forward end and the handles l0 attached to its rear end. The rear portion of the said main beam is slotted horizontally, as at 10, and in said slot is arranged a semicircular-shaped frame 11, the curved side being arranged foremost. The semicircular frame 11 is composed of the bow-piece 11, the forward crossbeam 11", the rear cross-beam 11, and the central beam 11, said central beam 11 having a reduced forward end, which fits a horizontal aperture 14 in the forward cross-beam,
the rear portion of said central beam passing between the members of the rear cross-beam, as clearly shown. The semicircular frame 11 is secured to the main beam by means of a pivotalbolt 12, which passes through the main beam 10, rear cross-beam 11 and central beam 11, thus locking the central beam in connection with the rear cross-bean1 and pivotally securing the frame to the main beam. The
frame is thus free to turn upon the pivot-bolt, whereby the position of the shovels can be adjusted, and to hold said frame in an adjusted position we employ a locking-pin 13, which passes through the main beam 10, and a perforation 13, produced in the bow-piece of the semicircular frame, a series of such perforations 13 being provided for the purpose of adjustment. The forward cross-beam is provided with a series of horizontal perfo' rations 11-, whereby the central beam can be adjusted, and the rear cross-beam is also provided with a series of vertical perforations 15, by means of which the central beam can al ways be locked in connection with the rear cross-beam. The shovels are attached to the ends of the bow-piece 11 and the rear end of the central beam 11. By looking the central beam in this manner it is held very secure, yet is quickly and easily adjusted, as is also the semicircular frame 11.
If desired, chains 16 and 17 may be attached to the pivotal and locking bolts, respectively, whereby they may be secured to the semicircular frame or main beam.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is 1. The combination, with a main beam slotted at its rear end, of the semicircular frame arranged in said slot and having a series of perforations produced therein, the forward cross-beam having a series of horizontal perforations, the rear slotted cross-beams having a series of vertical perforations, the central beam having a reduced forward end, and the locking and pivotal bolts, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a main beam slotted at its rear end, of a semicircular frame arranged within the slot, the forward crossbeam having a series of perforations, the rear cross-beam having a series of perforations, the central beam, and pivotal-and locking bolts, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
