Description

L (No Model.) J. L. DEMING. NEWSPAPER FILE.
3 No. 468,795. Patented Feb. 16, 1892.
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. DEMING, OF BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS.
NEWSPAPER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,795, dated February 16, 1892. Application filed July 11, 1889. Renewed July 6, 1891. Serial No. 898,603. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN L. DEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bentonville, in the county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Newspaper-Files; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in newspaper-files; and it consists, more particularly, in providing a grooved plate or trough having a flaring or flattened mouth and a cramped or constricted opopsite end which receives and holds a rod, the main portion of which is within the groove of the plate or trough, while a suitable fastening device, such as a hook, is provided at the flared mouth to hold the free end of the rod, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar letters, Figure 1 is a front View of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on line a: :1: thereof, showing the position of the papers when they are contained therein.
The plate A, having the longitudinal groove a therein, forms a trough, one end of which is flattened, forming a flaring mouth a',whii e the opposite sides of the end of the trough or groove are brought together, as at 0. to receive the enlarged conical head B, formed of a soft metal, such as lead, of the rod B. The
main portion of this rod lies within the groove Ct, while a catch 0 is placed at the flaring mouth a, which acts as a lock to receive the free end I) of the rod.
WVhen it is desired to secure papers by my invention, the rod B is slid out from the groove a through the constricted position a of the sides thereof and the papers laid in the trough or groove. The rod B is then again pushed in over them until the conical head B binds at a and its free end is secured by the catch 0. It is thus capable of forming a temporary binder for papers in which the backs thereof are protected from tearing, &c., and in which they are not perforated by teeth, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a newspaper-file, the combination of atrough or plate having a longitudinal groove therein, a flaring mouth at one end of the said groove and a constricted portion at the other, a rod resting in the said groove, and a conical head of soft metal upon one end of the rod engaged by the constricted portion of the said groove. as and for the purposes described. I
2. In a newspaper-file, the combination of atrough or plate havinga longitudinal groove therein, a flaring mouth at one end of the said groove and a constricted portion at the other, a rod resting in the said groove and having a conical head of soft metal upon one end thereof engaged by the constricted portion of the groove, and a locking device for the said rod situated at the flaring mouth, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony'whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
T. O. TUCKER, E. L. TAYLOR.
