H O R S ES H O E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,859, dated January 26, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. EAST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of IIeltonville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representa tion of this invention and is a top view. Fig. 2 is a perspective view opened out. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are details. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the clamp.

The object of this invention is to provide an expansive horseshoe for contracted or hoofbound feet; and the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the front sections of the shoe, which are hinged together with a lap-joint at B.

O C represent the rear sections of the shoe, which are hinged to the front sections with lap-joints, as at D 1), these joints being lateral. The joint ends of the sections are con vex, as at e, and they are provided with concave shoulders g. Each section of this hinged shoe is rabbeted on its inner side to provide an angular longitudinal seat h, having a horizontal ledge-bearing 7.: for the reception of the bow-spring S. The rear sections 0 C have heel-abutmentsm at the rear ends of the ledgebearings therein, against which the ends of the bow-spring hear. The bearingdedges of the four sections are continuous when the shoe is bent in normal shape, and they afford a bow-shaped seat for the lodgment and protection of the bow-spring.

The heel-sections C C are provided on their upper surface with upward, outward, and forward curved lugs Z, which are designed to be placed, when the shoe is applied to the hoof, inside the wall thereof at each end of the hoof, in this manner supporting the heel-nails and affording a purchase for the hoof at the heel of the shoe. These bars also assist materially in throwing the spring-pressure on the hoof at the extremities of the heel, where it is most effective in connecting the contraction. The spring, being boxed in between the ledges of the shoe-sections and the bottom of the hoof, is protected from being broken or injured.

This shoe is usually provided with removable calks w, having V-formed ribs u on their upper surface falling in grooves u of the sections and secured thereto by means of screws.

In applying the shoe to the horses foot I use an adjustable clamp, (indicated at J,) said clamp having a screw-stein I, whereby it can be drawn together or allowed to expand, according to the size of the hoof.

I am aware that heretofore horseshoes have been formed of a series of articulated or hinged sections, also that a spring has been employed within such sections, and I do not, therefore, wish to claim such, broadly, as my invention; but I am not aware that heretofore the sections comprising the shoe have been rabbeted on their inner sides in such a manner that a continuous horizontal bearing-ledge is provided, forming a bow-shaped seat for the lodgment and protection of the spring.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

The horseshoe comprising a series of four articulated or hinged sections, each of said sections being rabbeted upon its inner side to form a horizontal ledge, said ledges on the respective sections being so arranged as to form a continuous seat-flange, the rear sections having solid heel-abutments for the ends of the spring, said rear sections each also having on their upper surfaces an upward, outward, and forwardly curved lug, said lugs being adapted to enter the cleft in the hoof and affording a support for the heel-nails and a purchase for the hoof, and a bow-spring seated on the continuous ledge, with its ends bearing against the heel-abutments, substantially as specified.
