Be it known that I, ALPHONSE V. BENOIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink or Color Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same.

On February 3, 1891, I obtained Letters Patent No. 445,764 for an ink or color holder, which consisted, essentially, of a bottle or similar receptacle of glass molded with a neck and two small side receivers or pockets into which the ink or color. from the holder was to be poured, as required for use, through two or more openings in the neck.

The purpose of this invention was to provide a means whereby only a small portion of the contents of a holder for ink, color, or the like should be exposed to the air, and this is accomplished by the said device by filling the small pockets only as needed and keeping the supply in the main holder tightly corked up.

My present invention is an improvement on the device above described and is designed to obviate certain practical difficulties in the way of construction and to simplify the device as a whole.

The details of the improvements I shall describe by the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the complete device. Fig.2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the cork or stopper, and Fig. 4: is a vertical central section of a portion of a modification of the invention.

I employ any suitable form of bottle or receptacle A, molded or blown out of glass, porcelain, or the like, for containing the ink or other fluid. Said receptacle is provided with a neck B, which is closed by a cork O. The bottle A is formed in the mold or otherwise wit-h a seat or recess L on its exterior surface, for receiving a small receptacle or pocket D, preferably of glass or porcelain, although it may be made of any other suitable material, which is attached to it with one side against the neck B. dependently of the main receptacle and is secured to the latter by cement, and a small hole E is provided through which fluid may pass into it from the neck B. I

The pocket 1) is formed with an inwardlyprojecting flange or lip F in front, which partially covers or closes it, and in the edge of the latter is a notch G, through which the pen or brush may be drawn after dipping to remove the surplus fluid, which it takes up.

The cork C may be made in various ways. A wedge-shaped section may be cut outfrom its lower end, as shown at H in Figs. 1 and 8,. or a channel J may be cut in its side of a length sufficient to reach the openingE when the stopper is in place.- In the former case when the pocket is to be filled the stopper is partially removed and turned until the cutaway part II registers with the opening E and the bottle then tipped until the requisite quantity of fluid has run out into the pocket. In the latter case the stopper is simply turned until the channel J registers with the opening E. In this case it is desirable to use a plug K or some equivalent device in the stopper, which is removed to admit air into the bottle.

The lip F' serves the useful purpose of retaining in the pocket the fluid when poured from the bottle A, and further serves as a shield to exclude dust and dirt.

hat I now claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a bottle or receptacle of ordinary or suitable construction for ink or colors, having a reinforced upper part cut away to form a shoulder L, into which is fitted a smaller receptacle having an orifice or passage which when in place registers with a corresponding orifice or passage formed in the neck of the bottle, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a holder for ink or colors, consisting of a bottle or other receptacle having a neck provided with an annular flange upon its edge, a recess or seat formed upon the upper part of the receptacle, and a cup or pocket fitted into said recess or seat and extending up under the said annular flange and secured in position,

said pocket or cup having an orifice formed therein to register with a corresponding orifice formed in the neck of the bottle for the passage of ink or color from the bottle to the said cup or pocket, as set forth.

3. As an improved article of manufacture, a holder for ink or colors, consisting of a bottle or other receptacle having a neck, a seat formed upon the upper part of the said receptacle, and a cup or pocket fitted into said seat and havin gan orifice orpassagc which registers 10 with a corresponding orifice 0r passage formed lin the neck of the bottle, substantiallyas and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
