SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,917, dated January 12, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK. A. BLACKMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredonia, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates more particularly to fruit-baskets in which grapes and other delicate and perishable fruit are packed for shipment. I

The object of my invention is to construct a basket which will be light, strong, and durable, and which can be produced at comparatively small cost.

In the accompanying drawings, consisting of two sheets, Figure l'represents a perspective view of my improved basket. Fig. 2 is a plan View of a blank from which the body of the basket is formed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a partly-finished basket. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the basket. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the basket. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section thereof. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view on an enlarged scale, showing the ends of the strip forming the handle of the basket. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary cross -section on an enlarged scale, showing the fastening at the ends of the basket.

A represents a single blank or piece of thin board, preferably paper-board or straw-board, which is cut to the proper size to form the bottom, sides, and ends of the basket. The blank A is provided at each end with two slits CL, which extend inwardly a sufficient distance to form the end flaps of the basket. The blank A is placed upon a block or former of the shape of the basket to be formed, and the end flaps a between the slits are bent upwardly against the sides of the block on the dotted lines a and the side flaps b b are bent upwardly against the sides of the block on the dotted lines I) bto form the sides of the basket. The end portions 0 c of the side flaps are then bent inwardly on the dotted lines o c and lapped over the end flaps a to complete the ends of the basket. Each end of the basket is composed of an upturned end flap and two Serial No. 395,359. (No model.)

inwardly-bent side flaps forming three thicknesses or layers,-which are secured together by staples (Z, driven from the outside through the several flaps and clinched on the inner side of the basket.

E represents a metal band or rim secured to the top or upper edge of the basket and bent over the inner and outer edges of the basket. The band or rim E is secured to the basket by crimping, indenting, or puncturing the lower edges of the rim, so that the'metal will slightly penetrate the board. The rim or binding E secures the upper edges of the flaps forming the ends and sides of the basket to-. gether and holds the sides and ends of the basket from sagging or bending out of shape. The bodyofthebasketmaybefurtherstrengthened by metal bands or straps F and G, which extend transversely and longitudinally across the bottom of the basket and vertically on the sides and ends of the basket and are secured to the sides and ends of the basket by spurs or prongs g, inserted through the board and clinched on the inner side. The spurs are formed in the metal strips by cutting or stamping V-shaped slits in the strips and bending up the metal between the slits.

I-I represents the handle of basket, which is formed of a single strip of sheet metal extending from the underside of the bottom of the basket along the sides and over the top of the basket. The sides of the handle are provided with spurs h, which are inserted through openings or slits formed in the sides of the basket and through the metal binding E, and the points or ends of the spurs are clinched or bent against the inner sides of the basket. The ends of the handle extend down wardly on both sides of the basket and are bent inwardly under the bottom of the basket. The ends of the strip, forming the handle overlap each other on the under side of the bottom of the basket and are secured together by a spur h, formed on one of the ends and inserted through a slot 77/ formed on the other end of the strip and through the bottom of the basket, its point or inner end being bent or clinched on the inner side of the bottom. The spurs h h are formed similar to the spurs g and form a simple and secure means for fastening the handle to the basket. By extending the ends of the handle around the sides and bottom of the basket the body of the basket is further strengthened and the handle is securely and firmly fastened to the basket.

t represents a groove or recess formed in each side of the handle to receive the edges of the cover J, which rests upon the top rim or band E of the basket. The grooves or recesses zareformed bybendingorcorrugatingthestrip of metal forming the handle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. The cover J is preferably formed from a sheet of paper-board or straw-board and is provided with a strengthening band or strip of sheet metal 7c, extending longitudinally across the cover and secured thereto by spurs is, projecting through the cover and clinched on the opposite side of the cover. The ends of the strip of metal 7c project beyond the ends of the basket and are preferably bent downwardly and provided with slots 70 The ends of the metal band G are passed through the slots 10 of the cover and bent downwardly against the ends of the basket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, whereby the cover is firmly attached to the basket.

The sides and cover of the basket may be provided with a number of openings or airpassages Z.

I claim as my invention- 1. A basket having its bottom, sides, and ends formed from a single blank of thin board and provided with a metal band or rim fitting over the top or upper edge of the basket and bent downwardly against the inner andouter edges of the basket and secured in place by crimping or indenting the metal into the board, substantially as set forth.

2. A basket having its bottom, sides, and ends formed from a single blank of thin board and having a metal handle extending over the top of the basket downwardly on both sides and having its lower ends joined together and secured to the bottom of the basket, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a basket having a removable cover, of a metal handle extending over the top of the basket downwardly on both sides and having its lower ends joined together and secured to the bottom of the basket and provided on opposite sides above the top or upper edge of the basket with recesses or grooves adapted to receive and hold the cover, substantially as set forth.

4.- The combination, with abasket provided with a metal strip or band secured to the bottom and ends of the basket and a metalhandle provided on opposite sides with a groove or recess, of a cover adapted to fit in the recesses or grooves in the handle and provided at its opposite ends with slots adapted to receive the ends of the metal strip secured to the ends of the basket, substantially as set forth.
