ISAIAH BEST, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, AND JOHN J. SADLER, OF TORONTO CANADA; SAID BEST ASSIGNOR TO SAID SADLER.
SHAFT=LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,774, dated December 22, 1891. Applicatinn filed December 11,1890. Serial No. 374,352- (No model.) Patented in Canada April 1, 1890, No 34.031.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ISAIAH BEST, mannfacturer, of the village of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Durham, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, and JOHN JAMES SADLER, traveler, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have jointly invented a certain new and Improved Shaft-Loop, (for which we obtained Letters Patent No. 34,031 of the Dominion of Canada, dated April 1,1890,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to design a shaft-loop of that class into which the shaft can be pushed sidewise; and it consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement,- and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then definitely claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view of our improved shaft-loop when closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing the gate of the shaft opento allow the shaft to push through. Fig. is a detail of the spring-hinged gate. Fig. a is a rear elevation of spring-hinged gate.
A represents a metal loop having a slot A in its back and connected, as indicated, to the loop-strap B.' It will be observed that the upper section a of the loop A is separate from the other portion of the said loop A, but is pivoted on the lug Z), formed on the said loop A, as shown.
It will be observed that the gate a has hubs a, which fit in between the walls of the top of the slot A, through which walls and thehubs a the pivot 1) passes and secures said gate in place. Around these hubs are springs (Z, arranged as shown in Figs. 3 and at, one end of each acting on the gate, while its other end acts on the loop. Partly around each hub is a recess a, formed by a cap or cover a that hides the springs from the front, so that when in use the same are hidden from sight, and they are covered at the back by the strap B, so that they are fully protected from the weather.
O represents the shaft, which is broken away and shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, as passing through the loop, and in Fig. 2 in the act of being pushed through the gate or hinged section a. I
It will be observed that the section a is formed of an inverted V-shaped piece united by a curved cross-bar, whereby not only is the cross-bar strongly supported, but the back part of the inverted-V-shaped part serves to prevent wear on the strap B, as would be the .case if the section a were made without said back part. as has been proposed. lVith the view of preventing rattling and also wear on the shaft we insert a piece of rubber, leather, or similar material into the recess 1, made in the loop A, as shown. I
Vhat we claim as ourinvention is- The improved article of manufacture herein shown and described, comprising the loop A, provided with the lug b and the slot A", extending up to the lug and having secured in said lug the springs d and the pivotedgate a, the latter consisting of an inverted-V- shaped part having its lower ends connected by a curved cross-barwith its concave side downward and its upper end provided with hubs a, recesses c", and cap a', said lower part being adapted to pass through the slot A, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
