UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIC c IMPROVEMENT IN FISHING-LINE SINKERS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,453, dated February 21, 1865.

To all Awhom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, EBENEZER F. DECKER, of Southport,in the county of Lincoln and State of Maine, have invented an Improved Fishing-Line Sinker; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a side View, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of it as it appears when attached to a line and its hooks. Fig. 3 is a front, and Fig. et a side, view of the staple and the arm or horse, as it is termed by shermen, which constitute parts ofthe said sinker.

The body A of the sinker, having the shape denoted in the drawings, is composed of lead. Out of the lower part ofthe said body an arm, B, 'projects at an obtuse angle with the front face of the body, and has the hooklines a, b connected with its lower end by means of a swivel, G.

A staple, D, projects out of the upper end of the sinker or body A, and is connected with a ring, o, by means of a swivel, d. The fishing-line c is fastened to the ring c. The said staple D extends into the body A about half the length of the latter, and its two extremities or win gs terminate in two hooks,ff, which are hooked around ears g g, projecting from the upper end of the arm B, such arm also eX- tending into the body A. In other words, after the staple and arm are hooked together the body is to be cast on them, and in a proper mold for giving the requisite form to such body..

By my mode of making the sinker-viz., by connecting its arm and staple together and casting the lead body on them after being so connected-each part serves to keep the other in place under the strains and blows to which. they are liable while in use. Furthermore, the ring used for connecting the line with the upper swivel will serve as a guard to prevent the swivel, as well as the head of the'lead, from .bein g injured under the act of drawing the lead up against and over the bulwark or rail of a boat or vessel. v

When the line is attached directly to the head of the sinker or lead the latter is very.

apt to become seriously injured by bein g drawn in contact with the rail of the boat or vessel.

By the application of swivels to both termini of the sinker the sinker' can be turned around independently of either the line or the hook suspension-cords, and so as not to cause 'either to be twisted while the line lmay be in use.

I claim as my in vent-ion- The combination ofthe guard-ring, the line, the swivels, the sinker, and the arms D B, the Whole being arranged substantially as specilied.
