UNITED STATES 'PATENTV OFFICE.
TIMOTHY D. TERRY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ROGERS, PEET CO., OF SAME PLACE. A
WAISTBAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,402, dated December 1, 1891. Application iiled October 23, 1891. Serial No. 409,594. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY D. TEREY,of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved W`astband, of which the following is a full, clear, and enact description.
The invention relates to that class of waistbands mainly employed 011 boys pants, and embodying an elastic buttoning loop or tab that yields sufficiently to prevent tearing of the band under the severe strain to which the waistband is' subjected.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of waistbands of this character, to the end that the elastic tabs or loops and the non-elastic button-holes may both be made to engage the buttons at one andthe same time or either be used separately, as may be desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described, and defined in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective View of a portion of a waistband constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a back View of a part of the same, the elastic loop lying `wholly at one side of the band. Fig. 3 is a like view showing the elastic loop passed through the non-elastic button-hole. Fig. 4 is an end view, the `elastic loop beingin the position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a like view with the loop in the position shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section.
In the usual waistband A, of non-elastic fabric, are produced button-holes B, of the 0rdinary form, for engaging buttons on a shirtwaist or the like in the usual manner. At each button-hole B an elastic loop C is secured to the band, said loop being formed of elastic cord, the ends of which are sewed together and to the Vback of the waistband, as shown,
in vertical alignment with such button-holes. The looped ends or loops propere are located at the button-holes so as to overlie the same and both be capable of being together made to engage the buttons. In this use of the loop it forms a strengthening-strand around the button-hole. NVhen desired, however, the loop may be used separately and its elastic properties availed of. -Vihen the two are employed together, the loop lies Wholly at the side to which it is secured, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. When the loop is used alone, it is passed through the button-hole to the opposite side, as in Figs. 3 and 5. With my invention, therefore, the button-holes may be greatly strengthened, and the strengtheningstrand provided for the purpose may be employed separately to give elasticity to the connection when desired. y
I do not claim, broadly, a waistband having both non-elastic button-holes and yielding loops; but in my improved waistband the loop normally lies directly at the button-hole, extending around the same in transverse alignment therewith to permit the two to be employed at one and the same-time, while the loop is also capable of use alone to utilize its elastic properties.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a Waistband formed with button-holes and provided with separate elastic loops at such buttonholes normally extending around the buttonholes in alignment with the latter to form a strengthening-strand therefor and adapted to be passed through the holes for use separately to utilize their elastic properties, substantially as shown and described.
