UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. BOVMAN, OF BOONSBOROUGII, MARYLAND.
REIN-HOLDER'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,135, dated November 1*?, 1891.
Appncaan'ied May `21, 1891.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN E. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boonsborough, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rein-holders; and it has for its objects, among others,to provide a simple, cheap, ornamental, and efficient device for holding the reins, and which can be readily applied to a dash of a vehicle and which will firmly hold the reins without injury thereto.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the `novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a face view of a vehicle-dash Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line X X oft-Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line I XV of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views in which they occur.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a vehicle-dash of any known or approved construction. right-handside thereof I attach my reinholder, which consists of the plate B, having ears a for the reception of the screws or other securing means Z9, which pass into the ears of the back plate B. This plate is formed with lateral arms C, as seen best in Fig. 1, the up per end Vof which terminates in an upwardlyextending portion c, the upper end of which To the- Serial No. 393,527. (No model.)
is bent over and adapted to embrace the top of the dash, as shown in Fig. l and also in Fig. 2. The vertical portion is formed with a horizontal loop d. for a purpose hereinafter described.
Secured to the lower lateral arm of the back plate is a spring-metal plate E, the end of which is turned over at the top, as shown at 'L' in Fig. 2, the said plate being arranged beneath the loop d of the lateral arm of the back plate, as seen in Fig. 2, and secured to the as the said plate expands by pressure thereon by the insertion of the rein.
I may employ two or more of the rein-holders on a dash. In all of the forms of rein holders shown, however, the salient featurethat of the peculiar arrangement of the two spring-plates-is retained.
rlhe combination, with a suitable support having a loop, of a spring-plate secured at one end to said support and passed beneath the loop with its upper end curled over and a second spring-plate secured to the support at one end passed beneath the said loop and having its free end bearing upon the first-mentioned plate beneath the curled-over end thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed myname in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. BOWMAN. lVitnesses: l
