Description

(N0 Model.)
F. E. WILLIAMS. BUTTON OR STUD.
No. 462,831. Patented Nov. 10, 1891.
[TED
PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. \VILIJIAMS, OF NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR T 0 JAMES E. IIILLS, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
BUTTON OR STUD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,831, dated November 10, 1891. Application filed February 28, 1891. Serial No. 383,286. (No modeld To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK E. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons or Studs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in buttons or studs; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts aswill be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 representsaperspective view, on an enlarged scale, of my improved button or stud, showing in dotted lines the slide moved to one side. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the parts detached and illustrates the form of the slide before and after it is applied to the shank of the button or stud.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the head of a button or stud, which may be of any desired form and design, and has a shank or post B, with a foot 0 atan angle thereto. The foot O is grooved or channeled on the sides,as at c, and at the ends, as at c, and receives and supports the slide or shoe I). The slide or shoe D is preferably formed from a round or fiat ring of metal compressed into the side grooves c of the foot 0 in such manner as to allow adjustment thereof. Opposite side portions of the slide D are struck or bent inward toward each other, as at (Z, or about the central part thereof, or at a distance from each end equal to the length of the foot 0, so that said slide may be looked in either of its adjusted positions by engagement of said struck or bent inward portions (Z with either end of said foot. The channels or grooves c in the ends of the foot O receive the ends of the slide D to form a flush fitting of said parts at these points to obviate projecting obstructions for evident purposes.
To insert the button or stud in a button or stud hole, the slide is arranged as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and after insertion is pushed back to assume the position shown in full lines in said figure.
By the arrangement heretofore set forth a button or stud of increased strength, durability, and simplicityof structure is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is
1. A button or stud with a shank or post having a foot at an angle thereto formed with side and end channels or grooves and a slide or shoe embracing said foot and having movable bearing in said side channels or grooves, substantially as described.
2. A button or stud with a shank or post having a foot at an angle thereto formed with side and end channels or grooves and a slide or shoe embracing said foot and having movable bearing in said side channels or grooves, the sides of said slide being struck or bent inward toward each other to form a lock or catch by engaging the opposite ends of said foot, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK. E. WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
CHARLES S. HYER, F. W. BARNACLO.
