Description

(No Model.)
H. H. CHASE. UDDER PROTECTOR.
No. 462,664. Patented Nov. 3, 1891.
witnesses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY II. CHASE, OF GENESEO, ILLINOIS.
UDDER-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,664, dated November 3, 1891. Application filed Iebrnaryll, 1890. Serial No. 340,076. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneseo, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Udder-Protectors for Cows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to protectors or coverings for the teats and udders of cows, the object being to provide a cheap, simple, and effective device whereby the udder and teats can be kept free from dirt or filth and at the same time be kept warm, thus enhancing the health and comfort of the animal and improving the quality of the milk.
I am awarethat an udder-protector, broadly, is not new, and such is not claimed, broadly, by. me, my invention consisting in the novel construction of device hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View of a device constructed according to my invention applied to a cow. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same detached.
In the said drawings, the reference-letterA designates a bag or support, of leatheigcan vas, cloth, or other suitable material, of a shape and size to fit snugly over and around the udder of a cow. The front of this bag is open, and the upper ends thereof are provided with buckles a, by means of which they can be secured to the surcingle B by means of the straps E E, secured to the surcingle. This surcingle is adapted to pass around the body of the cow, and one end is provided with a buckle I), so that it can be adjusted to different sizes of animals. Attached to said surcingle at a point opposite to where the bag is secured is an adjustable strap D, projecting [rearwardly and provided at its free end with a ring 0. This strap is movable upon the sureingle, so that it may be adjusted thereon. Secured to the rear of bag A is a ring a, and this ring and the ring 0 are connected bythe adjustable straps C O.
The operation and advantages of the device will be apparent. The bag is applied to the udder and the surcingle buckled around the cow with the straps O C passing around each side of the rump, as will be seen in Fig. 1. By making the strap D movable upon the surcingle it can be adjusted to the proper po sition on the cows back.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In an udder-protector, in combination, the udder'supporting bag having aV-shaped formation at its upper edge and conforming below said edge substantially to the cows bag, being closed at its rear and front and provided with a buckle at each of its front upper ends and with a ring at its rear central upper end, the extensible surcingle B, adapted to be passed entirely around the body of the cow immediately forward of her hind legs, two cow-bag take-up buckling'st-raps E, attached to the surcingle and connecting with the buckles of the front ends of the udderprotecting bag, said surcingle also having an upper central backwardly-extending buckling portion D, and the two rear supportingstraps C C, connected to the ring 0 of the rear central end of the protector-bag and to the backwardly-extended portion D of the surcingle, the whole forming an udder-protector which, while it is closed at both ends, is adjustable and can be readily manipulated for milking purposes and as readily fastened up in position around the cows bag, substantially as described.
HENRY IT. CHASE.
