RATCHET-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,543, dated November 3, 1891.
Application tiled October 15, 1890. Serial No. 368,180. (No model.)
To (0% whom it may OOH/06772,.
Be it known that I, GEORGE ll. EVATT, of Fort llope, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Ratchet-Drill, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved ratchet-drill which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and adapted to drive the bit continuously forward on both the forward and backward strokes of the handle.
The invention consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the samegas will be described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of part of the improvement on the line :1; .r of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a sectional plan view of the improvement on the line 9 1 of Fig. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view ofone of the ratchet mechanisms. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the improvement on the line .2' of Fig. Fig. 7 is an enlarged side elevation of the stock. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sec-- tional' plan view of part of the improvement on the line U. u'of Fig. l, and Fig. 9 is a similar view of part of the improvement on the line u r of Fig. 2.
The improved ratchct'drill is provided with a stock A, in thelowerend of which is adapted to be held the bit B. The stock A is provided with a shank C, mounted to turn in a hub D, formed centrally in the bottom of the casing D, in or through which the said shank C tends centrally. ()n the lower end of the shank C formed a collar (f', abutting against the under side of the hub I), and on the said shank are also formed the two ratchet-wheels C and C Fig. 7, and a reduced end O provided with an annular groove and extending through the cover F, held on top of the casing D. The latter is provided on its outside with a horizontally-extending handle E, taken hold of by the operator to work the ratchet drill, as hereinafter more fully de- On the hub F is mounted to turn loosely the horizontally-extending handle I, carrying the spring-pressed pawl I, engaging a ratchetwheel J, secured or formed onv the hub F, and serving to turn the said huh and its cover F, so as to screw up the feed-screw II when feeding the device.
The lower ratchet--wheel C of the shank C is engaged by, a pawl 1, Fig. 8, pressed on by a spring E and pivoted in the handle E of the casing D. The next ratchet-wheel C of the shank G is engaged by one, two, ormore spring-pressed pawls K, pivoted in the lower face of a gear-wheel K, mounted to turn loosely on the shank G. The gear-wheel K is in mesh with a number of pinions L. Fig. i journaled in an annular flange F Fig. (i, projecting from the bottom of the cover F into the casing D. Each of the pinions L carries a larger gear-wheel X in mesh with an internal gear-wheel 0, formed on the inside of the casing D.
In order to lock the cover F, the casing D, and the stock A together, blocks P are employed, which pass through recesses in the hub F into the annular groove 0", formed in the upper reduced part C" of the shank O of the stock A. Each of the blocks P is provided with an outwardly-projecting pin P, engaged by an L-shaped slot Q, formed on a ring Q, adapted to slip over the hub F of the cover to prevent the said blocks from becoming disengaged from the hub F.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the several parts are in position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the operator takes hold of the handleI with his left hand and with his right hand moves the handle E backward and forward. At the forward movement of the handle E in the direction of the arrow a, (see Fig. (3,) the spring-pressed pawl E ing a tooth of the ratchet-wheel C turns the stock A and the bit 13 in the direction of the arrow a. 0n the backward movement of the ICO ,by engagengaging the gear-wh eel K, turns the latter in the direction of the arrow at. This movement of the gear-wheel K causes a like movement of the stock A as the pawls K of the said gear-wheel engage the ratchehwheel C of the stock A and its bit B. Thus on the forward as well as on the backward stroke of the handle E a forward movement is imparted to the bit B, it being understood that v on the forward movement of said handle the gear-wheels N and L roll off on their respective gear-wheels O and K, the pawls K sliding back on the ratchet C Itis not necessary to hold either handle stationary at any time. The only care required is that the handle I must be moved from the operator while E is being drawn toward him. The working of the drill is not interfered with at any time, but continues uninterruptedly until the desired work is accomplished.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a ratchet-drill, the combination, with a stock adapted to carry the bit and provided with two ratchet-wheels, of a handled casing in which is pivoted to turn the said stock and which is connected by a spring-pressed pawl with one of said ratchet-wheels, and a gearwheel carrying spring-pressed pawls engaging the said second ratchet-wheel, the said gearwheel being connected by differential gearwheels with the handled casing, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a ratchet-drill, the combination, with a stock adapted to carry the bit and provided with two ratchet-wheels, of a handled casing provided with an internal annular gear-wheel, a gear-wheel mounted to turn loosely on the said stock within the said casing, springpressed pawls held in the said gear-wheel and adapted to engage one of said ratchet-wheels on the stock, and differential gear-wheels connecting the said gear-wheelwith the internal annular gear-wheelon the said casing, substantially as shown and described. 3. In a ratchet-drill, the combination, with a stock adapted to carry the bit and provided with two ratchet-wheels, of a handled casing provided with an internal annular gear-wheel, a gear-wheel mounted to turn loosely on the said stock within the said casing, springpressed pawls held in the said gear-wheel and adapted to engage one of said ratchet-wheels on the stock, differential gear-wheels connecting the said gear-wheel with the internal annular gear-Wheel on the said casing, and a spring-pressed pawl held on the said handled casingand engaging with the other of the said ratchet-wheels on the stock, substantially as shown and described.
