No. 461,375. Patented Oct. 13, 1891'.
UNITED STATES ArtNr OFFICE.
COMBINED DRAWER GUIDE AND STgOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,375, dated October 13, 1891. Application filed June 12, 1891. Serial No. 396,017 (No model.) i
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRYl E. SPAUNHORST', of the city of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Drawer Guide and Stop, of which the following isA a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined drawer guide and stop; audit consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claims.
' In the drawings, Figure lisa vertical crosssection of a desk having my invention applied thereto. lFig. 2 is a perspective view of t-he guide, having the slide located therein.
A Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the slide detached, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a spring which I employ in connecting the drawer to the slide.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l represents a desk of ordinary construction, and 2 2 are two longitudinal beams extending the entire length of the desk and attached to the same in the usual manner.
3 represents the guide, which is formed of a single piece of metal, the edges of which are bent upwardly and4 inwardly, which, when thus formed, leaves a space et, the object of which will be hereinafter stated. One end of the guide leading from the bottom thereof is bent at right angles thereto and extends a little beyond the sides of said guide and is provided with suitable apertures 5, by which means the guide may be fastened to one of the longitudinal beams secured within the desk l. To effect a permanent and fixed position of the guide, the base of the same at the opposite end thereof, or the upwardlyturned portion, is provided with a second set of apertures, through which nails or screws may be inserted for fastening to the other beams 2, located within the desk, as better illustrated in Fig. 1.
6 represents a lip formed integral with the guide and bent at right angles to the basel thereof, and is formed by slitting the same,
as shown in Fig. 2, thereby leaving a square opening 7 in said base portion of the guide. The object of the lip 6v is to form a stop for the slide 8 when the drawer 9 is opened, thereby preventing the same from being withdrawn entirely from the desk. Said slide 8 consists of a fiat piece of metal of sufficient thickness to tit snugly and yet easily movable within the guide, as will be fully observed, thereby dispensing with as much lost motion as possible in a transverse direction to said guide.
A l0 represents an elongated opening formed in the plate or slide S, thereby forming two parallel arms 1l, which pass on both sides of the .lip 6 when the said slide is drawn outward.
2 represents a square block of metal fastened in any desirable manner to the slide 8, by which means and other devices the said slide is connected to the drawer.
13 represents a spring made of a flat piece of metal, one end of which is secured to the under surface or bottom of the drawer 9, and the opposite end thereof passes through au opening 14, formed in said bottom of the drawer, whereby it is in easy reach and when desired can be operated. At or near themedium portion of the spring 13 is formed therein a raised angular portionl, corresponding to the block 12, carried by the slide S, and which is adapted to tit over the same when the device is in functional operation.
It will be observed from the foregoing de-I scription that when the device is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the drawer is connected to the slide 8 by means of a spring 13, thereby forming a stop and also a guide for the drawer.
Should it become necessary to withdraw the drawer entirely from the desk the said drawer may be partially opened in order to allow the insertion of the hand to manipulate the spring 13. By so doing the slide will be released by the spring 13 by the act of raising the said spring, and thereby allow the drawer to be withdrawn.
Vhen it is desired to again locate the drawer in its normal position on or in connection with the slide, the drawer is merely inserted-in the desk in the usual manner, and closing the same the slide will by entirely IOO pass into its proper position under the spring 13 and lock the same automatically.
Fromvthe construction of my invention, as will be fully seen, the usual guides employed for the drawers may be dispensed with and also the support for the same, if found desirable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a combined drawer guide and stop, a guide 3, an upturned portion at one end thereof and a flattened portion at the opposite end for securing said guide in position, a
stop 6 in the guide, a slide movingin the guide, l
provided with a central opening -1O for the reception of said stop, a block` on said slide, and a device secured to the drawer vadapted to engage said block, substantially as described.
2. In a combined drawer guide and stop, a guide 3, formed of a single piece of metal, a
gated opening 10 formed therein, ablock, such as 12, carried by the said slide, and a spring 13, carried by the drawer and adapted to engage with said block, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY E.' SPAUNHORST.
