R. J. EDWARDS.
AUTDMATIG SAW LUBRIGATOR.
Patented Oct. 13,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD J. EDW'ARDS, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS.
AUTOMATIC SAW-LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,074, dated October 13, 1891.
' Application filed February 20, 1891. Serial No. 382.176: (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. ED\VARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Saw-Lubricators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the accompanying d rawi ng the figure represents a perspective view of an ordinary bucksaw provided with my improvements.
The invention has particular reference to that class of automatic lubricators particularly adapted for use on reciprocating saws and covered by my former patent numbered 444,696 and dated January 13,1891; and it consists in certain novel improvements upon the said patented device that will be fully hereinafter pointed out and claimed.
The invention is shown as applied to an ordinary bucksaw; but, inasmuch as it may without the exercise of invention be applied to other classes of reciprocating saws, I do not desire to be limited in this respect.
In the drawing, a a designate the main oiling or lubricating pads, embracing the back of the saw-blade and bearing upon opposite sides of the same. Secured rigidly to these pads is the inner or upper end of a reciprocating rod 1), the free end of which passes through and works in a hole in the lower bar of the saw-frame, this bar working parallel with the saw-blade and being provided with a removable split key I) in its end to restrict its upward movement. Between the pads and the lowerbar of the saw-frame the rod is surrounded by a coil-s n'ing, the tendency of which being to expand, the pads are kept normally pressed upward as far as the key on I the other end of the rod will permit.
The parts above described are substantially the same as shown in my former patent, the only material difference being that the coilspring in the present device is not comically shaped and the upper part of the vertical reciprocating bar is done away with entirely.
Secured in the bifurcated upper or inner end of the rod 1), by means of a horizontal removable split key 0, is a fiat steel supplemental rod or bar 0, which is at least as thin as the saw-blade, and is arranged directly above and in line with the same, this thin bar extending to or nearly to the upper bar of the saw frame and being there provided with a pairof supplemental lubricating-pads a a, which embrace the saw-blade in a manner similar to the main pads a.
A saw provided with my improved automatic oiling-pads, it is evident, is started into the wood so that the stick being sawed will come between the main and supplemental pads, whereby during the reciprocations of the saw the same will be automatically moved back and forth upon the saw-blade, the thin connecting-bar 0 working freely in the cut made by the saw as it advances into the wood. It will thus be seen that the portions of the saw-blade both above and below the stick of wood will be kept thoroughly and constantly oiled during the operation of the saw, it being simply necessary to keep the pads well saturated with a suitable lubricant. The connecting-rod has also a limited pivotal movement upon the pin 0. in order that the lubricating-pads may rise slightly in riding over rounded sticks of wood while the saw is being started into the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. The combination, with a saw-blade, of the main oiling-pads and means for actuating the same, and supplemental pads connected to the said main pads so as to operate in unison therewith, bot-h pads bearing upon the saw blade some distance from each other, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a saw-blade, of the main oiling-pads and means for guiding and actuating the same, the supplemental oiling-pads located some distance from the main pads, and a thin fiat bar connecting the two sets of pads and adapted to work in the cut formed by the saw in the material be ing sawed, substantially as set forth.
The combination, with a saw-blade, of two sets of automatic reciprocating lubricating-pads separated from and connected to each other so as to operate in unison and bear upon the saw-blade on both sides of the material being sawed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARDJ. EDWARDS.
