- E. COVERT;
LIFTING JAGK. No. 457,183. Patented Aug. 4, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOCH COVERT, OF FARMER VILLAGE, NEIV YORK.
LlFTlNG-JAC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,183, dated August 4, 1891.
Application filed June 5, 1891. Serial No. 395,207. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOGH COVERT. a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmer Village, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved jack ready for operation; Fig. 2, a similar View of thejack elevated; and Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional view of the jack, showing the standard set ecoentrically.
This invention has special reference to that class of lifting-jacks covered by my patent, No. 432,230, dated July 15, 1890; and it has for its object to remedy a serious defect found to exist in the construction shown in said patent, as will presently appear.
In the drawings, a designates a vertical tubular standard screwed or otherwise secured in a circular or other shaped base 1), said base consisting, preferably, of a ring having formed integrally with it a series of radial arched arms a, supporting the ring or tube' into which the standard is screwed. Working in this tubular standard is a liftingbar 0, having attached to its upper end the stepped supportingbracket d, to the rear edge of which the operating-lever e is pivoted.
. A pair of fulcrum-links f pivotally connect one of the radial arms of the base to the lever near its point of connection to the liftingbracket.
The operation of this lifting-jack is apparent from the two views shown in the drawings. The stepped foot or lifting-bracket is placed under the axle of 'the Vehicle to be lifted or other body and the longer arm of of the center.
the lever pressed down, whereupon the lifting-bar and its foot or bracket will be raised and supported in such raised position by the lever and links, as fully set forth in my former patent.
In my former patent the tubular standard is shown set in the center of the base and the supporting fulcrum-links pivoted to one side This arrangement in practice is found to be objectionable, in that it causes the jack to tilt or tip when in use. To remedy this objectionable feature I pivot the supporting-links at or near the center of the base and secure the standard eccentrically, as at g, as shown clearly in the drawings. Iuasm uch as the pivotal links are in a vertical position and do all the work of supporting the load when the jack is in use, it will be observed that thus pivoting them in or near the center of base prevents the jack tilting in any direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a base, a standard secured thereto eccentrically, as at g, a liftingrod guided by the standard and provided with a lifting bracket or foot, a lever pivotally connected to said bracket, a pair of supporting fulcrum-links pivotally connecting the lever to the base, the said links being pivoted at or near the center of the base, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ENOCH COVERT.
