Description
W. P. MERRILL.
HEAT RADIATING ATTACHMENT FOR FLUES.
No. 45,425. Patented Dec. 18, 1864.
UNIT D STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM P. MERRILL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN IMPROVEMENT lN HEAT-RADIATING ATTACHMENT FOR. FL UES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45.425. dated December 13, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. MERRILL,
of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukeeand State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved HeatRadiating Attachment.
for Flues; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the radiator applied to a flue or chimney provided with dampers and all arrangedin such a manner that the waste heat which passes up the line from a stove or tire may, when required, be made to pass through the radiator in an apartment above that containing the stove or fire, thereby economizing in fuel-and avoiding; the necessity of passing a stove-pipe through the floor, which has an unsightly-appearance, and which is nowdone in order to obtain-the same end.
A represents a flue or chimney, B B the flooring of a building, and O a room above that containing the stove or fire from which the waste heat passes up the flue.
D is a radiator, which may be of any suitaule form, and communicates with the flue A. by means of two pipes, E E-one at its top and the other at its bottom-and F is a damper er in the flue or chimney A, placed at thejuuction of the lower pipe, E, withthe flue, and so arranged that when turned so as to extend across the flue the waste heat will pass into the lower pipe, E, through the radiator, and through the upper pipe, E, into the flue, thereby causing heat to be radiatediuto the room 0. When it is not desired to have the" heat radiated in said room 0, thedamper Fis turned so as to close the lower pipe, E, of the radiator, and the waste heat is allowed to pass directly up the flue or chimney. Thus, by this simple means, I obtain the benefit of the radiator in a room above that containing a stove or fire, and avoid the use of a stove pipe, hitherto employed for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to seem reby Letters Patent---.
The attachment of a radiator to achimneyflue combined with a damper for the purpose of directin gthe waste heat through theradiator or allowing it to pass directly up the chimney, substantially as described and represented.
i WILLIAM P. MERRILL. Witnesses:
ENooH CHASE, GUSTAV REAP.
