UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ANTONIO MESSINA AND CHARLES S. B. MOFFAT, OF KEY IVEST, FLORIDA.
LAM P-OHIMNEY CLEAN'ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 453,316, dated June 2, 1891.
pplication'iiled October 22, 1890. Serial No- 368,909. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN ANTONIO MES- SINA and CHARLES S. B. MOEFAT citizens of the United States, residing at Key West, in the county of Monroe and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Chimney Cleaner, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in lamp-chimney cleaners.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be readily inserted into a lampchimney and expanded and to conform to the configuration of a chimney when itis expanded.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and the arrangement of parts hereinafterfully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a lamp-chimney cleaner constructed in accordance with this invention and provided with a cloth cover or bag. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the cover or bag being removed and the lamp -chimney cleaner being eX- panded. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a stem or rod, provided at one end with a handle 2 and having at the other end a cap or knob 3 and a ring 4, provided with a circumferential groove 5 and a series of recesses 6 in its circumference and having ar` ranged in the recesses perforated ends 7 of curved spreader-arms 8, which are secured to the ring 4t by a wire 9, arranged in the groove 5 and passing through the perforations of the ends 7 The curved spreader-arms 8 are provided near their outer ends with eyes 10, which are arranged on the inner faces of the arms, and towhich are secured bifurcated ends 11 of rods 12, which have their other ends secured in recesses 13 in the circumfertial annular Iiange 14, arranged at the upper end of a sliding sleeve 15, and provided with a circumferential groove, in which is secured a wire 16, that fastens the rods 12 to the iiange. The sleeve 15is capable of longitudinal movement on the stem or rod 1 to bring the rods 12 approximately perpendicular to the spreaderarms to expand the latter and to arrange the rodsJ 12 along the stem to close or contract the spreader-arms. The longitudinally-moving sleeve is provided with a slot 17, extending longitudinally-of itand receiving a projection 18 of the stein 1 to prevent the sleeve turning thereon. The curved spreader-arms are constrncted of thin sheet metal, preferably steel, and are slightly transversely concaved, and are longitudinally curved similarly to the ordinary lamp-chimney from their upper or hinged ends to their lower or outer ends, and the said spreader-arms are adapted to be expanded within a chimney and conform to the configuration of the same to press or force in contact with the chimney a cloth bag 20, preferably constructed with canton-annel to remove grease and smoke and other products of combustion. The canton-iianucl bag is padded at 22 with cotton or the like to give elasticity and prevent injury to a chimney.
The spreader-arms consist of themetal body and a cloth or felt covering or exterior 23, and they are arranged in a circular series around the stem, and when they are closed they entirely surround and inclose the upper portion of the stem. The end 24 of the sleeve is provided with oppositely-curved fingerholds 25, which enable the Sleeve to be readily moved foroperating the device, and the said `sleeve is provided intermediate of its ends with a ring 26, secured to the Sleeve by radial arms 27, and the said ring is adapted to have the open ends of the bag or cover drawn aroundit, and thereby secure and properly hold on the chimney-cleaner, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
1. In a chimney-cleaner, the combination of the stem, the rigid spreaderarms curved throughout their length and conforming to the configuration of a chimney and hinged to the stem, the sliding sleeve arranged on the stem, and the rods pivotally connecting the IOO :mns and the sleeve, substantially :is described.
2. In n Chimney-cleaner, the combination of the stem, the rigid spreader-arms hingedto the stem and consisting of the metal body and a felt exterior, the sliding sleeve arranged on the stern, and the rods pivotally connecting the spreader-arms and the sleeve, substantially as described.
3. In n ehilnney-elemier, the combination of the stem. the spreader-arms hinged to the stem, the sleeve sliding on the stem and provided with :t ring 2G, the rods pivotnlly oonnected to the sleeve and the spreader-mms,
