SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 453,303, dated June 2, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KOSTA R. MILOVANO- VITCH-KOKA, colonel and military attach of the King of Servia, subject of the King of Servia,and residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria- Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Repeating-Rifles; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same, reference being had to the accompany- 1ng drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of so much of a breech-loading gun embodying my invention as will be necessary to illustrate the same. Fig. 2 is a top plan View, and Fig. 3 a side elevation with part of the receiver broken away. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal axial sectional elevation of the breech-bolt; and Figs. 5 and 6 are top plan views, the handle or actuating portion thereof--being shown drawn out in Fig. 6. Fig. 7 is a side elevation, and Fig. 8 a cross-section on line m tr of Fig. '7, of the breech-bolt proper. Fig. 9 shows the breech-bolt head byan end and an under side. view, respectively. Fig. 10 shows the handle. or actuating piece of the breech-bolt in side elevation and cross-section, respectively, the latter being taken on or about on the line y y indicated in said side elevation. Fig.11 shows in end view and side elevation that piece of the breech-bolt to-which the firing-pin is connected and that serves to set the said pin to full or half cock. The invention relates to that class of breechloading fire-arms in which the breechbolt has a longitudinal and partly-rotary movement imparted to it by a pull in a rectilinear direction and known as the straight-pull breech action; and it has for its object to simplify the construction of thebreech action and increase thestrength thereof and to combine with the gun a magazine depending therefrom and opening into the receiver, the cartridges being fed thereto in a straight vertical line by a feed-spring and follower.
The further object of my invention is to provide the magazine with means for holding the cartridges from being moved into the receiver when the breech-bolt is drawn back and with means for moving the cartridge holder or check out of the way and locking the same in that position to adapt the gun for use as a single-loader; also, with means for compressing the feed-spring and forlocking the same and the follower against operation for the purpose of facilitating the introduction of the cartridges into the magazine.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction .of the breech mechanism, in the combination of the parts thereof, and in the construction of the magazine, as will now be fully described, reference being had to the above-described drawings, in which like letters indicate like parts wherever such may occur in the figures thereof.

handle-piece A hearing against the rear end of the breech-bolt A, so that the latter can be pushed forward to close the breech. I have hereinbefore stated that. when the breech-bolt and its component parts are in the position shown in Fig. 6 said breech-bolt may be introduced into the chamber provided therefor in the receiver. It follows that by moving said bolt into the position shown theymay be removed from the receiver, andfrom the description of the means for connecting the parts it will be readily seen that they can be dismembered or disconnected with great facility. This is done by first unscrewing the cock A from the end of the firing-pin a then loosening the screw (r snfiicient-ly to permit the withdrawal of the bolt-head A when the firing-pin and its spring may also be withdrawn, and as the intermediate piece A, that actuates the breech-bolt, is connected thereto by the firing-pin and the cock A said piece can be detached immediately after the piece A has.been unscrewed from the firingpin. as will be readily understood.

a provided lock it firmly to the receiver.
As the breech-bolt is being moved forward to close the breech, the full-cock notch of in the rib a of the cock A will engage the sear a and prevent the cock A and the firing-pin from .advancing with the breech-bolt, thus bringing the spring a under tension tothrow the pin forward when pressure is applied to the trigger a, to which the searis fulcrumed orpivoted. The sear and trigger are returned into'their normal positioniby the sear-spring a, Fig. 1, and as shown in said Fig. l the triggerhas a lever-arm a, that bears on the under side of the rear tang 12 of the receiver to provide the necessary leverage to depress the sear a.
The gun may be fired by the forwardniovement" of the breech-bolt when this is done with sufficient force to explode the cartridgeprimer by locking the sear out of the path of the cock A To this end I provide a'locking lever or latch a, Fig. 1, that has a notch in its forward end adapted to engage a corresponding shoulder of on the. trigger, said latch being pivoted to the trigger guardtas shown.
It has hereinbefore been stated that the cock A has a milled flange or rib 0. for the purpose of nianipulating said cock. It will readily be seen that the cockmay be drawn out for the purpose of setting the same for firing after the breech is closed or for releasing the said cock from the sear or setting as a whole is very short as compared with the secured to the receiver, as shown in Fig. 13.
breech-bolts-in use in this class of fire-arms, and that it is devoid of a groove in that portion which carries the locking-rib, as is usual, so that those parts which are subjected to the greatest strain are in no manner weakened. On withdrawing the-breech-bolt A to open the breech the spiral extension of the actuat ing-piece ,A operates in the corresponding groove 0. of the breech-bolt proper and imparts to said bolt a partial rotation from right to left, thereby disengaging the rib a and the radial locking shoulders a from their re-' spective recesses, when the breech-bolt is free to move back to its full extent. This backward movement of the breech-bolt is limited by an abutment 11 Fig. 1, on the receiver, which is in the path of the stop-disk a" and arrests the further backward movement of the bolt.
The gun,as described, may be used as a single-loader, or it may be used as a' rapidfiring or magazinegun, to which end the receiver has in its bottom in front of the trigger-guard a slot of such form and dimension as to afiord a ready passage to a cartridge inserted from below, a vertical magazine being employed to receive a number of cartridges and feeding devices combined therewith to feed the cartridges one after another to the slot in the receiver.
The magazine 0,-Figs. 1 and 13 to 18, inclusive, is substantially of parallelogramm atic form, the forward vertical wall thereof being conical or having the sha'peof a bullet, as shown in Fig. 17. Around its upper edge is formed a flange 0 by means of which it is The bottom 0 of the magazineC is detachably connected with the casing, said bottom having at its front end a lug or lugs 0-, that take into a suitable slot or slots in the forward end wall of said casing, (see Figs. 13 and 17,) while at its rear end said bottom carries an exteriorly-threaded sleeve 0 Fig. 1, that is screwed into a nearly-cylindrical recess 0 Fig. 17, formed in the rear wall of' the magazine-casing, said sleeve serving also as a bearing for the lower end of a rod 0", provided at its upper end with a wedge-shaped block 0 hereinafter referred to as the spreader-wedge,
and for purposes that will presently be ex plained. p
The cartridges may be'supplied't o the magazine one by one, or a number of them in the form of a charge may be introduced by the 'aid of cartridge-holders, each holder carrying a number of cartridges suflicicnt to fill the magazine. On the other hand, the feeding devices for the cartridges may be locked against operation and the gun used as a single-loader, the cartridges being introduced into the receiver from above after thebroechbolt has been moved back to uncover the breech, as' shown in Fig; 3.
The feeding devices for feeding the cartridges to the receiver B consist, as usual, of a feed-springc, to the free end of which is secured a follower 0 (See Figs. 1, 3, and 18.)
In order to prevent the cartridges leaving the magazine under the stress of the feedspring 0 when the receiver is open, I provide a stop 0, Fig. 20, consisting of a plate 0 that has two L-shaped spring-arm's 0 .0 and to the back of said plate is secured a sleeve 0" for the passage of the screw-rod 0 Fig. 1, that connects therear' end of the magazine bottom a to the casing, as hereinabove set forth, and that serves as a guide to the springstop 0', which is movable vertically on the rod 0 As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 3, thearms c extend forward along the shell of the upper cartridge, and the distance between them is such as to allow the rim of the shell to project slightly into the receiver, as shown in Fig. 3. The elastic or spring arms are comparatively short, so that the forward end of the cartridges will is moved forward its head A will engage the projecting shellrim and carry the cartridge along, which cartridge will be pushed fully into the receiver as soon as its rim has passed the end of' the spring-arms c of the stop C, as will be readily understood.
C is secured a plate whose ends project be yond the opposite sides of said plate 0 and to said ends are secured milled disks 0 that lie outside of the magazine-case, the projecting ends 0 of the plate lying in a vertical slot 0, on the rear wall of which'is formed a stop-shoulder 0 as more plainly shown in Fig. 13.
It willrbe readily seen that when the stop C is pulled down against the stress of the feed-spring and the projecting ends 0 moved under the shoulder a the cartridges will be locked against upward movement under the stress of said feed-spring, so that the gun can be used as a single-loader. By simply shoulder a the feed-spring will at once carry the parts into their normal position, the upthe end of the slot 0, and is locked against downward movement by the locking-shoulder e As shown in Fig. 20, the L-shaped springvarms 0" c of the stop 0 are bent toward each other or inwardly in such manner as to form a V-shaped space above the bend of the arms; When the stop is in'its normal position, this bend lies immediately below the spreaderwedge 0 hereiubefore referred to. By moving the spreader-wedge downward between said spring-arms they will be spread apart be tilted upward, their bullet ends projecting fairly into the receiver. The object of these devices is to provide a means whereby the magazine may be emptied by simply spread- ;ing the arms of the stop 0' and uncovering the receiver, when all the cartridges will be ejected by the feed-spring.
In order to" return the spreader-wedge 0 into its normal position, a coiled spring'c is mounted on the rod 0 Figs. 1, 3, and21, between the sleeve 0 of the stop 0' and the wedge 0 e The rod 0 and wedge e are moved down wardly by the following devices: A camor eccentric provided with a thumb-piece c is arranged to revolve in. the sleeve or tubular nut 0 hereinbefore referred to, said eccentric having an inclined face 0 in contact with the bottom of the magazine, and to said eccentric is pivoted the rod 0 that carries the spreaderwedge 0 If the cam is turned to the povsition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 17, the inclined surface will move under the magazine,
drawing the rod 0 down to spread the arms of the stop 0 as will be readily understood.
In the description of the construction of the parts of the breech-bolt and their interconnection through the medium of the firingpin and its spring I provide an elastic connection between these parts, whereby the cock A and. the handle-piece A may have an independent motion, the head A 'being made removable for the purpose of having access to the chamber that contains the spring which actuates the firing-pin.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 13, the magazine is provided in its opposite sides with a recess 0 at the base of which is formed a semicircular slot or opening 0 Fig. 13, In said recesses is fitted a yoke or U -shaped actuating or draw bar 0 Fig. 19, the vertical spring-arms c of which are slotted 'for the sake of lightness and for the purpose of giving them a greater of a quarter of a sphere.

The object of the described arrangement is to admit of the introduction of a charge of cartridges through the receiver without interference by the feed-spring, so that the magazine may be readily replenished.
In the introduction of the cartridges it is not necessary that the looking or retaining arms 0 c of the stop 0' be spread. These arms being, as stated, more or less elastic will yield to pressure from above and spread, so as to admit of the free passage of the cartridges.
In the description of the magazine 0, I have stated that the bottom thereof is detachably.v connected with such magazine, and as the feed-spring c is secured to said bottom it is obvious that thesaid spring can be readily removed when this becomes necessary for in the receiver for locking the handle-piece against rotation, said extension. having a shoulder 0.", adapted to engage the rear face of the breech-bolt, as and for the purpose set forth. v
-2. Ina breech-loadinggun, the combination,
with the receiver, the breech-bolt provided at its rear end'with a helical or spiral groove, a spring-actuated firing-pin contained in the bolt, and a cock A to which the rearend of said firing-pin is secured, of a handle-piece A, having rectilinear motion only in the ,re ceiver and provided with a helical or spiral extension 06 in perpetual engagement with the like groove in the bolt and with'a shoulder a", adapted to engage the rear faceof the breech-bolt, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a breech-loading gun, the combination,
- with the receiver, the breech-bolt provided at its rear end with a helical or spiral groove, the firing-pin and its spring a contained within the breech-bolt, the cock A provided with the full and half cock notches and to which the rear end of the firing-pin is secured, and the spring-actuated sear a projecting into the receiver, of the handle-piece A, provided with a longitudinal rib a on its under side and with the helical or; spiral extension (3 having the abutment or shoulder a", adapted to engage the rear face of the breech-bolt, said extension being in perpetual engagement with the corresponding groovein the breechbolt and said rib being in perpetual engagement with a groove in the receiver, substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.
4. Thecombination withthebreech-boltand the firing-pin provided near its front end with radial lugs a fl'of a bolt-head provided with a IIO tubular extension fitting into the front end of II the breech-bolt, said extension having radial recesses for. the reception of the lugs a,sub-
stantially as and for the purposes set forlh.
5. The coinbination, with the breech-bolt the spring-actuated firing-pin provided at its front end with radial lugs a and the cock A into which said firing-pin is screwed, of the bolt-head provided with an extension fitting into the front end of the breech-bolt, said extension having radial recesses for the recephandle-pieceprovided with a helical or spiral extension adapted to operate in the corresponding groove of the bolt,.a cock pro.- vided with a full and half cock notches loosely inserted in the handle-piece, a firingpin extending axially through the bolt and handle-piece and havingits rear end rigidly connected with the cock and provided near its forward end with an abutment or collar, and a coiled spring located within the chamber of the bolt and encompassing the firingpin, the ends of said spring abutting, respectively, against-the rear end of said chamber and against the collar of said pin, substant-ially as and for the purpose described.
7. In a breech-loading gun, a breech-bolt composed of two parts A and A", the said part A being provided with a longitudinal locking-rib projecting beyond the outer end of said part A and having a recess in its inner I face, and said part A" being provided with a tubular extension adapted to fit into said outer end of the part A, said tubular extension having a longitudinal groove a" the lugs a a on' said part A, adapted to engage the recess in the locking-rib and recesses in the receiver, respectively, and the screw a, extending through the locking-rib into the longitudinal groove (0", for the purpose set forth.
8. Inabreeeh-loadin g gun,the combination, with the receiver, the breech-bolt composed of a tubular bolt provided at its rear end with a helical or spiral groove, and a like bolthead provided with an extension fitting into the front end of the bolt, said extension having in its face radial recesses, of a springactuated firing-pin within said bolt, provided near its front end with a collar and with radial lugs in front of said collar, adapted to enter the recesses in the bolt-head, the cock A to which the rear end of the firing-pin is screwed, and the handle-piece A, loosely mounted on the cock and'provided with a rib a and with a helical or spiral extension a having an abutment or", adapted to engage the rear face of the breech-bolt, said extension being in perpetual engagement with the corresponding groove in said breech-bolt and said rib a in perpetual en gagemcnt with a groove ing endwise motion in .bolt, and bolt-head and having its in the receiver, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
9. In a breeeh-loadinggun, the combination, with the bolt A, the firing-pin, and its actuating-spring a, arranged as described, said firingpin being provided with radial lugs a, of the bolt-head A, provided with a diametrical groove in its rear face for the reception of the lugs on the firing-pin, and a locking device for locking the bolt-head to the bolt, substantially as and for the purposedeseribed.
10. In a breech-loading gun, the combination, with the receiver provided in one of its sides with a locking recess or shoulder and at its opposite side with a stop-shoulder D of the breech-bolt provided with a longitudinal rib, and a stop-disli a secured to said rib,adapted to respectively engage the locking and stop shoulders of the receiver as the bolt is moving in one or the other direction and is partially rotated during such movement, substantiall y as and for the purpose described.
11. In a breeeh-loading gun, the combination, with the breech-bolt A, provided with the locking-rib a, with a helical or spiral groove at its rear end, and with an axial bore, a portion of which is enlarged, of the bolt-head A, provided with an extension or shank having a diametral groove in its rear face and fitting into the forward end ofthe bolt, a handle-piece A, provided with a helical or spiral extension adapted to operate in'the corresponding groove of the bolt, a cock A-',havthe handle-piece, a firingepin extending through the handle-piece, rear end rigidly connected to the cock and provided nearits forward end with a collar and with radial lugs d in front of said collar, said lugs being adapted to engage the diametral groove in the bolt-head, a coiled spring located in the enlarged portion of the bore of the bolt and encompassing the tiring-pin, the ends of said spring abutting, respectively,
' against the collar of the tiring-pin and against the rear end of the enlarged portion of the bore of the belt, a stop-disk a, and a setserew a, extending through said disk and through the rib a, and the belt for locking the said parts together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
12. In a breech-loading gun,the combination, with the breech-boltand a bolt-head provided with a shank or extension fitting into the bolt, said bolt-head and its shank being provided with a longitudinal groove a l, of the shell-extractor a", bent, as described, and confined by said bolt in the groove (0" of the bolt-head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
13. In a breech-loading gun, the eombination, with the receiver provided with a longitudinal slot in its bottom, the breech-bolt having a to-and-t'ro motion in the receiver, a magazine depending from said receiver, and a Ieettspring arranged within the magazine for feeding the cartridges to the receiver, of
elastic and vertically-adjustable, stop-arms extending along'the mouthof the-magazine,
substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
14.. In abreech-loadinggun, the combina tion, with the receiver provided with a longitudinal slot in its bottom, the breech-bolt having a to-and-fro motion ,in the receiver, a
vertical magazine depending from said receiver, and a feed-spring arranged within the magazinelfor feeding the cartridges to the receiver, of elastic stop-arms extending along the mouth of the magazine at the rear end thereof, said stop-arms being adapted for vertical adjustment in the magazine, and a locking device for locking the arms into position when adjusted, substantially as and for the purpose described.
15. In a breech loading gun, the combination, with. the receiver provideitw'ith a 1on gitudinal slot in its bottom, the breech-bolt having a to-an'd-fro motion in the receiver, a vertical magazine depending from said receiver, and afeed-spring arranged within the magazine for feeding the cartridges to the receiver, of elastic arms extending along the mouth of the magazine at the real-end thereof and a vertically-movable spreader adapted to operate on the stop-arms to spread the same for the purpose of affording to the cartridges free access to or egress from the maga zine, as described. I
16. In a breech-loading gun, the combination, .with the receiver provided with a longitudinal' slot in its bottom, the breech-bolt having'a to-and-fro motion in the receiver, a
vertical magazine'depending from the said receiver, and a feed-spring arranged within the magazine for feeding the cartridges to the receiver, of the elastic stop-arms extending along themouth of themagazineat the rear end thereof, and a vertically movable spreader adapted to operate on the stop-arms to spread the same for the purpose of affording to the and a feed-spring arranged within the magazine for feeding the cartridges to the receiver, of a verticallyadj ustable draw-bar connected with the feed end of the spring, and alocking device for locking the bar in position when adjusted, substantially as and for-the purpose described. The combination, with the magazine provided in its rear vertical wall with a recess and a rod or shaft adapted to move vertically in said recess and carrying at its upper end a wedge-shaped block, of connected elastic stop-arms loosely mounted on the rod, said arms extending forwardly along the mouth of the magazineon opposite sides of the block, and a locking device'for locking the arms against motion on or with the rod,
whereby when said rod is moved down the arms are moved laterally,substantially as 20. The combination, with the magazine provided with a recess in its rear vertical wall and a rod or shaft adapted to move vertically in said recess and carrying awedgeshaped block at its upper end, of connected elastic stop-arms extending forwardly along the mouth of the magazine on opposite sides of the block, said stop-arms being mounted on the rod and adapted to have-aniudepend- 'ent motion thereon, and a locking device'to lock saidarms into the position to which they are moved, substantially as and forthe purposedescribed.
